I have never used any of the Imperial Armour rule books, but as a Chaos player a drop-pod would be nice to have. Is it "legal" to use the rules from IA in games that are not Apocalypse?

Only if your opponent is ok with it, Ive seen some tournies that allow FW rules too.

As long as your opponent says it's OK, go for it. In fact, (AFAIK) all of the IA books state you must have your opponents permission to use the stuff from them.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

As long as people know ahead of time that you plan to use things from an IA book they generally wont care, but be ready for them to want to use stuff as well.

Most tournaments locally are starting to be quite open for Imperial Armour units, as long as they are 40k approved (ie, have the 40,000 stamp).

But yeah, as long as you don't jump it on your opponent, you should be fine.

I don't actually believe the Apocalypse: Second Edition even has a statement saying you need permission, but it's best to clear things up.

It also depends on what you're going to use, I suppose. People practically ask me to field my Grot Tanks, since they are so novel and look so damned awesome.

A while ago GW said that FW armies and units can be used in regular games, regardless of opponent approval. The idea never caught on though, and some people don't like the idea of fighting against things they can't look at a codex to figure out.

Citation please. IA2 Second Edition - the latest IA book - doesn't say that.

Technically, anything in the game requires opponents' approval. You can't force your opponent to play against something.

Had some people try to do this to me in a game at the FLGS. "If it has the 40k stamp it means I can use it," no questions asked. I mentioned that most IA rules require your opponent's permission *BEFORE* the game. He acted like I was being TFG.

Coming from an IG player running with Stormravens and other gak as allies, in a list that fielded upwards of 40 lascannons.

I lol'd.

I got slapped with exactly the same thing, my best mate, who is a WAAC player, basically said we should start using forgeworld models, and I thought okay, why not. Then in our next game, I tried one of the Leman Russ variants just for variety, and he spammed me with six damn Lucius drop pods by getting the tech marine that allows extra dreadnaughts, and then five other empty pods from stripped down tac squads. So, first turn, all six dreadnaughts landing smack in the middle of my deployment zone and took out everything in my army that could defeat them and then slaughtered everything else in the next two. (This was before the rules were changed.) I threw a giant hissy fit at him and now they are banned...

I love everything else they do for the variety, but those pods stink!

You got screwed. You can only have 3 Luscius pattern drop pods....they are almost double the cost of a drop pod, take up a fast attack slot...and force the dreadnought to take a dangerous terrain test if it wants to assault. At least thats how it works now.

Know thy self. Everything follows this.

The biggest problem with IA stuff is really just that the rules aren't as readily available, so people aren't familiar with them.

So regardless of whether or not FW themselves claim that permission is or is not required, it's good form to allow your opponent to see the rules before deciding if they want to play against you.

Because ultimately, regardless of whether or not you need your opponent's permission to use IA units, you do need their agreement to play a game with you.

What about the whole fliers vs skimmers thing? That seems pretty bogus... At least from my green skin perspective.

At my gaming club we allow FW stuff and it's powerful, but also its mostly overcosted. I did play a game where my opponent played the orc flyer that I had nothing that could hurt it. For it's points it still wasn't worth it. I was playing the old necron codex and it was his deff dreads that stole my lunch money.

My Gaming Club also allows IA stuff. It adds a nice bit of variety to otherwise standard armies.

Of course if they do use it they need to bring along the rules for it and allow their opponent full acces so they know what they're in for.

It's also a matter of a politeness as well, if you are planning to field models not listed in the normal codex it's better to tell your opponent that you plan to do so. Most tournaments seem to disallow FW stuff.
