Back in February 2012, Chris Cuevas and I (Craig Russell) ran the first ever Crucible- a Warmachine/Hordes GT in Orlando, Florida. The Grand Prize for the event was a fully-painted 35 pt. army of the winner's choosing.

Well, the winner was Mr. Jon Galvin and this was the army he requested:

Naaresh
Rhinodon
Archidon
Basilisk Krea
Nihilators x10
BeastHandlersx6
Animantarax
Agonizer
Feralgeist

Jon also requested the following for a color scheme:

"the studio scheme but . . . instead of the Skorne red for the main army color that it would be changed to "Heartfire" under the P3 line. . . the Archidon and Rhinodon, I would just like them to have a deep reddish back, nothing too saturated and a tan or "bleachbone" underbelly."

I got the first installment of models to start assembly and paint, so we're off and running. The Animantarax won't even be released until May, so clearly that will have to wait, and there were a couple others that weren't in stock, but we'll get them in the mix eventually.

I'll be blogging my progress every step of the way, so stay tuned!

With a big assist from my buddy Angelo, all models for the Crucible Grand Prize are now trimmed, assembled, and gap-filled (minus the yet to be released Animantarax and 2 paingivers). I'll prime them tonight and start the painting process over the weekend.

Most of the gap filling was done with Liquid Greenstuff, but some gaps are just too wide and need good, old, non-liquid GS. Take a look a the freaking chasm on the back of this guy!

And lastly, not related to the Grand Prize, Angelo requested an Afro for his brother's Shaman.

Infantry is complete! Also, I'm trying out a new background for the photos.

I've never done this much yellow before. Interesting trying to create enough contrast in the highlights!

P3 Heartfire
Glazed Red (Red Ink & Matte Medium, heavily dilluted w/water)
P3 Hearfire
Badmoon Yellow

Just finished up the first of the warbeasts for the Crucible Grand Prize - the Pokemon-esque Rhinodon!

I tried mightily to get away from Pokemon territory with this guy, and I think by and large I succeeded, but what can you do? The model screams, "Rhinodon, I choose you!" all by itself

Here's a shot of the back colors.

For the record, here's what I used:

Scab Red
Vallejo Red/Scab Red 50/50
Vallejo Red
Black Glaze (Matte Medium + Black Ink, diluted 50/50)
Red Glaze (see above)
Vallejo Red

I'm particularly chuffed with the way the belly turned out. Its mostly just varying degrees of Bleached Bone and a Flesh Wash glaze, but there's Black Glaze in there too as you get further away from the belly.

Its a bird, its a plane, its. . .one of the coolest models Privateer Press makes!

The Archidon is complete! Actually it was complete last Friday (I painted him at the same time as the Rhinodon), but I'm just getting around to posting it up.

The wings on this guy were fairly unremarkable, and that made them kind of a challenge to do. They constitute a majority of the model, so they have to be right. I think, deep down, they need some freehand in there, but there's pro-painted and then there's Pro-Painted. Sorry, Mr. Galvin! :-)

Last two warbeasts finished! While not as impressive as the last two, these were neither difficult nor terribly time-consuming. For some reason, the pictures didn't come out crystal clear. I'm going to assume it was because they were taken on an overcast morning.

This little bugger is almost all glazes. The skin started as just Elf Flesh mixed with a little White Glaze, and then there are several layers of Black, Purple, & Magenta glazes. The eyes were done with a simple White Glaze (Vallejo) to make them look milky.

Ugh, I just noticed I need to retouch the flesh hooks. . .

I went to your blog - very nice. I'm very impressed with how the battle engine turned out.
