I'm completely new to the game, but planning to click home 3rd ed... If I want to order models at the same time what to buy? I understand that there are some kind of army lists in the forces book and want to buy stuff that works in conjunction with them for a start. Me and a gaming buddy want germans and soviet and pretty much armour and tanks. Any advice?

You mean, where to buy stuff cheap or which tanks to buy? Early, mid or late war?

Your first step is to actually buy one of the books. FoW is split into 3 periods; early, mid and late war. Basically tanks and guns get bigger as the war progresses and points values are adjusted to allow this to be reflected ingame. Personally I would start in midwar as it will allow you to easily branch out into any period you like with minimal changes to your forces and its more stable. If you want to simply get massive tanks then Late war would be more suitable for you.
If you start with mid war get the Eastern Front book, if you start in late war get Grey Wolf.
If you are aiming to get a lot of tanks may I suggest that you get them from the Plastic Soldier Company. You can easily get most if not all your army for under £60 and they are excellent quality.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.
-Leman Russ, Meditations on Imperial Command book XVI (AKA the RT era White Dwarf Commpendium).
Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Yeah, and if You want to start Late War, then Panzer IV H will be Your mainstay tank and luckily they are available from Plastic Soldier Company (You will need at least three boxes - or two boxes and two single reinforcement sprues). That will do with Company HQ and two mandatory Combat Platoons.

I mean WHICH to buy. If I understand it correctly, there are some army lists in the 3rd ed Forces-book. Which models should we buy, if we want them to work with those lists? We are interested in german and soviet and pretty much armour. No need for complete armies, just advice on where to begin so we can get started!

Could You go to easyarmy.com and pick the tank company list are You interested? They officially have V3 lists for free, so I think it is safe to quote them here. For Germans there are only SS and Heer versions available, both are using either Panzer IV H or Panther A tanks for HQ and Combat platoons. The choice is up to You, but I'd stick to Panzer IV. Once You have dealt with HQ and Combat platoon sections, we could proceed with choices under other entries (antiair, assault guns etc).

Hi Decaius.
I also reccomend Easy Army .Great way to buid your army and it gives you a neat Order Of Battle and Equipment Reference Sheets too!
(My hand writing is dificult to decipher sometimes... )
I also reccomend The Plastic Soldier Company, £16,50 for 5 tanks is great value,But they do army bundles for even better value!

In regards to the Soviet tank question, your going to need a lot of T-34s and T-34/85s to start using the forces book.
PSC is the best for the Soviet tanks too, as you can get their kit that makes 5 T-34s or T34/85s for $20.

You are welcome! Just to let You know, I recently went through the same ordeals (starting Late War German Tank Company list) and this board has been very helpful. In fact, I've recieved better, detailed and more well-reasoned responses than on the official Battlefront FoW forum.

whoa way to complexe here.
if i understand your question here is what you want :
buy the 3rd edition hard cover book, which will include a basic german and soviet late war list.
buy a box (5) of panzer IV (H or later), from your choice of vendors
buy a box (5) of t-34 soviet armor with the t-34/85 option (as there are mid and late war t-34)
read the rules and play the game, then build your forces from there.
