Hey guys, I am super new here, and to 40k overall. I have been seeing a lot of converting online and it has got me thinking, I have a few StarWars kits I don't have any use for and a friend of mine told me if I am going to play Orks I should at least try my hands at one conversion. I have 3 models 2 I can for sure use and one I am super on the fence about, the 2 kits I can use are Darth Vader's TIE fighter and Luke's X-Wing. The only model I am not to sure about is my Cutaway Millenium Falcon. What I am asking for is tips/tricks for converting and mostly ideas as to just what I can turn this stuff into, any help would be awesome.

No, these models are too recognizable. No matter what you do they'll probably look like Star Wars toys with bitz stuck on.

I think if you simply *must* cut up awesome star wars memorabilia (*cries*) then I'd be more tempted to use small pieces -at the most- as armor plates / panels / engine parts / waaagh banners etc. - rather than trying to convert the whole model to be an ork vehicle. I.e nick a few rivety, wirey looking bits and add them to a bitz box.

I am not to sure as to just what vehicles the Orks can loot, but if I flip the TIE Fighter around it kind of looks like a Eldar tank. It even has a hole at the top for mounting a gun or something. I could see it working. I have got all the little bitz I want, the only thing I know I am doing for sure is a Orky looking R2-D2.

im doing a little orky conversion right now for an x-wing homage. I'm using the valk cockpit sides as wings as they look the part and will probably use a grotbomb for the fuselage and put shootas on the wing tips. possibly a coulple of underslung rockets.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

1) Those things are too valuable to convert.
2) They'll still be too recognisable
3) They are made of hard plastic, and therefore hard to work with.
4) If none of that sways you, wait until you have more experience before converting them.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

I never even thought of the plastic that kind of puts a damper on things. Couldn't I just get a wood burner (or something else with a edge that heats up) and kind of cut out what I need from the models? I am not to worried about the value of the X-Wing or the TIE Fighter, I opened the box when I was a kid so I don't think anyone will be buying them the Millenium Falcon however is still in box and all of that, witch is why I am on the fence about it...also I am a smuggler at heart.

Absolutely Right! For the love of Money, please reconsider what you are about to do. If you take these into a collectables shop, or sell them on EBay, you can put that money towards the 40k Hobby.
If you chop these up now, you'll find it very frustrating to deal with, and likely quit half way through it all. All you've accomplished is destroying a collectable. And yes, its true,: even if you did follow through with a full conversion, as You pick up more expierance in this game and hobby, you'll realize A) Its still Too Star Wars for 40k B) Your skills have improved since making them and they no longer reflect your abilities Or your army. C) Your opponants army really makes your conversions stand out as Lacking.

Please please please reconsider this course of action. Have a look on eBay and list these models if you are needing to get rid of them.

if you wanted to do something really large scale you could use a valk's actual wings. it has the engines, you could slim down the cargo bay thing and trim up the nose. are you going for an imperial guard look?

I am not sure about what look I am going for, In truth I was just going to buy a bunch of plasticard and do some drawings. But now I am unsure of how hard the plastic is, and if it will cut well.

Most models tend to be a hard palstic, and requires a fine saw to cut with anykind of efficiancey. Plasticard , on the other hand, comes in a variety of thicknesses and types, ranging from extemely thin and easy to cut, to very thick and difficult to cut, as well as types of plastic pipe and tubing. Most model railroad shops carry all types, and some are stamped to look like aluminum siding, sidewalk tiles, etc. Definately have a go with that stuff and get some decent sketches with a good realistic objective in mind.
