hey guys, just wanted your opinion on something. I recently started a crimson fists army but halfway through i'm getting kind of tired of painting so much blue :p Since I decided on playing a vulkan list I came up with the idea of painting roughly half of my vanilla marines as salamanders to use together with my crimson fists. How do you feel about that? Might look a little weird on the table but I'm doing it so I get to try out painting them too. Would it bother you to play against such an army?

Should not be an issue for casual games and the like. Tourny's should be OK since they are painted...but you will lose alot of points because their is no cohesive feel to the army.
Now, if you really wanted to switch up paint colors, make each unit a different chapter. A squad from the Crimson Fists, another from Salamanders, a 3rd as Ultra's, Your Fast units can be done as Raven Guard and Hawk Lords. Your Heavies as Emps Fists.
Your back story being several frigatres, each with a small component of a SM Chapter all responded to a distress call at the same time and arriving together decided to join forces to begin the butt kicking rather than wait for their specific Chapter reinforcements (or were so ordered to by the local =][=).

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

It might be too late now, since you're already part way through, but an army themed around the ragged remains of a grand army could be great. Have each squad painted up as a different chapter, but cover the guys in battle damage - and perhaps the odd piece of armour the wrong colour, to represent scavenging. Maybe even the odd piece of non-standard weaponry, like an imperial guard grenade launcher rather than a bolter, to emphasise the ragtag band theme.

Otherwise, for your army, I don't think that most casual players would complain - but unless this sort of thing is a carefully thought out theme, I can't see it looking that great.

Space marine chapters regularly fight along side each other, there is a space marine battle novel about the white scars and raven guard fighting side by side. There shouldn't be any issue with this, as it happens so often in the fluff. I would recommend having a designated HQ choice from each chapter though.

Go for it!
