This is good news. I was hoping that bastard didn't get off scot-free.

So, they arrested him for something he did 14 years ago?

Good for them... I guess.

Makes me wonder what took them so long.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Perhaps this is in order:

I have some sympathy, it wasn't a wise move but was a legal one and not truly unnatural. If she was 15 lock him up, 18 is ok, just about.
What he actually did wrong is not what he is reviled for: walking out on his family. That however is so commonplace its not considered news.

Looks like someone went and did some digging though, however as they found something and if the allegations are proven true then all sympathy will evaporate.

What's the statute of limitations on this crime though? 14 years is a long time to prosecute anything short of murder. I doubt there is enough evidence for a conviction as well.

This made me go looking up age of consent legislation in the US. I had forgotten how weird it is in some places.

California's is really kind of harsh. Age of consent is reached at 18, but the close-in-age argument is not a valid defense, it just reduces the penalty. So, basically, two minors of the same can be charged for having sex. Or so sayeth Wikipedia.

10 years, but its basically from the date that the crime is reported, not committed.

Are you sure? I just read the article on it, on Wiki, and it seemed to indicate when the crime was committed. I can't quite decipher all the Law-jargon throughout the rest of it though, so you could be right. Perhaps a Lawyer could fill us in?

There were a lot of people on Dakka that had the guy pegged right from the time the first story about him and his student came out.
I've seen first hand the wreckage a teacher that pulls this crap does to a family, so I hope they throw the book at this guy.

I found this...

For criminal cases, a prosecutor may file a charge of aggravated rape at any time, with no limitation (in California, an aggravated rape is rape that involves a weapon, more than one person, or seriously injures the victim). Prosecution for "normal" sexual assault has a statute of limitations of six years. However, there is an exception made for DNA analysis. Since it is a relatively new technology, if a DNA test can conclusively prove the identity of a rapist, prosecution can take place within one year of the discovery.

In regards to child molestation, there has been a series of great upheavals regarding the statute of limitations in California. In the early 1990s, the legislature passed a bill that retroactively waived the statute of limitations for all crimes of child molestation, meaning even people who were previously immune to prosecution could suddenly be arrested. This law was overturned as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in a recent case, so now the law's retroactive provision is eliminated.

What remains is a 10 year statute of limitations for child molestation. HOWEVER, the crime can also be prosecuted within one year of WHENEVER a victim tells the police (even past the 10 year mark). This sounds rather contradictory, because this means that the 10 year limitation is essentially pointless, but it is the current law of the land. The California legislature is constantly debating about this, so the law may change in the near future. You should talk to a California attorney familiar with these cases for the most up to date information.

...here.

I first looked at the crime as child molestation, but on thinking its probably sexual assault, which has a 6 year limitation.

Somewhere in south-central England.

According to the California statue of limitations, the prosecution for a sex crime against an under 18 must begin before the alleged victim's 28th birthday, or within 10 years.

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/ wrote:
801.1. (a) Notwithstanding any other limitation of time described in this chapter, prosecution for a felony offense described in Section 261, 286, 288, 288.5, 288a, or 289, or Section 289.5, as enacted by Chapter 293 of the Statutes of 1991 relating to penetration by an unknown object, that is alleged to have been committed when the victim was under the age of 18 years, may be commenced any time prior to the victim's 28th birthday.
(b) Notwithstanding any other limitation of time described in this chapter, if subdivision (a) does not apply, prosecution for a felony offense described in subdivision (c) of Section 290 shall be commenced within 10 years after commission of the offense.

If the alleged crime was against a 17-year old 14 years ago, the limitation has clearly been reached.

The court appointed lawyer will probably get this guy off in five minutes, however his relationship with the 18-year old has been broken up, which no doubt was the purpose of the arrest.

Well, as I said in the last thread the bloke is clearly a spanker, what did he did was morally wrong, but I genuinely think this is over the to, whats to be gained by his arrest now?!

Seriously, is being an arsehole punishable with prison? Its not like she was 8 years old or anything.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

If he's anything like the teacher that started hitting on my friend while she was underage, and from all appearances he seems to be, I'd like to see the bastard locked up for a few years.
The relationship she had turned early on to a sexual one with both denying anything was going on, and he was all the while using a lot of mind games on her, taking advantage of her rift with her parents. At one point after they were married with kids, he threatened to kill her family if she left him, and it just spiralled from there.
The kicker came when he brought home a new girlfriend and announced she was going to live with them and if my friend didn't like it, she could leave. She took that as her que to go, but by that time she was really messed up by his manipulations and abuse to the point she was years coming out from under all of it.

They're basically tarring and feathering him. At least if there is no exception for his behavior (meaning, he can actually be prosecuted) in California law.

Per the talking head on the news this morning, the girl called him in jail and dumped him. YES!
