Subject: First Game with the new Empire Book!

Hey mates, today I was able to try out the new book and my first victim was a Bretonnia Army at 2500 points. As it stands, it was a complete Massacre for the EMPIRE!!! . To be honest, it was really once-sided match as my magic and shooting was just off the charts, but here where pretty much the highlights of the game.
* Granted the loss of our mortars was expected and many people where frustrated about it (tested it out and lets just say it didnt do very well at all ), I can say personally that I believe that it has now been replaced by the Hellblaster . An Empire Engineer can give it his BS which means it hits on 4s @ long range and the thing is nearly impossible to misfire, and lets just say I watched an ENTIRE unit of x12 Grail Knights vanish after ONE hellblaster fired as I rolled 24 shots! Granted it was a great roll but I have a tendency to roll very well with my War-Machines at my gamestore, and I plan to run 2x of them minimum in 2,000 to 3,000 games as they are great at what they do. People will learn to fear the Hellblaster again :.
* The Lore of Heavens Wizard-Mobile is by far the one I perfer out of the two, as it really gives our State Troops the buff they need in CC, especially in combination with the new prayers our Warrior Priests get, making them scary good. The Lore of Heavens Wizard-Mobile and its ability alone that gives every unit within 6 inches +1 to hit in close combat is amazing, and combining that with the Warrior Priests prayer that allows re-rolls to wound in close combat is just God-Like. Basically, I watched one of my 49x Halberd Hordes with a warrior priest hit on 3+, with rolls to hit and to wound = another dead unit of Knights of the realm. This really address one of our weaknesses, and this alone will make us a lot more effective in CC. Besides that, the Spells that the Heavens-Mobile can dish out is very nice as well, but I still plan to take a Lvl. 4 w/Metal as my base Wizard Lord.
* Although it was just for fun, but taking Karl Franz on a Pegasus w/Ghal Maraz is a very effective, but cheap way to run this guy. He is still Inspiring Presence 18 inches w/LD10, and although he isnt riding Deathclaw, the Pegasus still gives him enough mobility to be a very nasty support character, which he proved multiple times (D3 wounds with no Armor Saves w/4 attacks is just awesome!). Granted I will most likely run a regular General of the Empire on a Griffion in the future, this is one cheap way of running our best character so you can try it out and tell me what you think.
* Detachment-Wise....... Still a bit undecided. Ran a detachment of 15x Swords w/one of my 2x Halberd Hordes, but ran a Detachment of 20x FC w/my other one to see which performed better, and to be honest, both did a good job. Though the Swordsmen had a bit more staying power, the FC's 2x attacks was very effective as well, so still undecided at this point.
As it stands, I am loving the new Empire book and I cant wait to try out a lot of the new stuff as soon as I can, which will most likely be 1x unit of 3x to 4x Demi-Gryphon Knights w/ FC, Steel Standard and Lances (Halberds are nice, but the 1+ save is too good to pass up) and after that, plan to get another regiment of State Troops (considering a Horde of 50x Spearmen, but will most likely go with another horde of 49x Halberds w/a Warrior Priest, as S4 is MUCH better then more attacks in my experience). Anyways, heres my take on the new Empire, and granted it wasnt against the greatest army out there, it was still a god game to get a feel for the new Empire book, which will be nice as my next opponent will most likely be Ogres or HE.

Did you use a Steam Tank? That model and the Helblaster were what had been pulling me over from 40K and to WHFB and The Empire. I'm glad to hear that the Helblaster is still a good unit but has the lowered toughness, less reliable Steam Tank been nerfed into the garage?

I hate hard counters. In a game of rock, paper, scissors, I hate playing any of the factions because no matter what you choose you might as well not deploy against your hard counter. I want to use a gun. Rock, paper, and scissors could all probably still beat gun, but gun will never feel like a game is a lost cause. |

Couple things stood out for me in this post
1. how did you get 50 halberds into a knight lance?
2. You tested the book against one of the weakest armies out there that requires so much skill to play that one tiny mistake or a new foe will cost you the game.

Haven't you answered your own question?
Besides I'm not sure where you get the idea that Brettonians are a weak army....

They are a weak army in the hands of someone who lets halberds into the flank of a lance... And who runs grail knights...
I am just saying I would of liked to hear about this book against one of the more standard competitive armies than one of the books 8th ed does not love

Grail Knights were taken out with the Hellblaster. Doesn't say anything about the halberds hitting the flank.

From looking at it, it says ALL UNITS within 6 inches benefit from +1 to hit, which they where and yes, it was in the flanks of a lance of 12x KOTR, but was just pointing out how potent they can be now w/the rerolls to hit on 3's thanks to the Heavens-Chariot mobile and a Warrior Priest's hatred, and the Prayer that allows rerolls to wound in CC. Since that point, I have played against HE and Ogres, and both games where victories for me, and a lot is thanks to the Warrior Priest and the Heavens-Mobile. Against the Ogres, I won that game thanks to my 2x Hellblasters w/an Engineer for each one just decimating his Mournfang Cavalry and his Bull Horde, which was then finished in CC thanks to one of my Halberd Hordes getting flaming attacks thanks to the Warrior Priests Prayer, negating his Regeneration save . Against the HE, it was the Heavens-Mobile bond spell that allowed me to use the Raging Tornado, allowing me to hold off his nasty White Lion horde for 2x turns and weaken them with my Comet cast from my Lvl. 4 w/Heavens mounted on it, which has made me respect the Lore of Heavens much a lot more. Will be playing against the new Orcs and Goblins for the first time in a bit so I'll tell you how it goes.

So the Ogre player's ironblasters let you keep your hellblasters? Odd. Or did he not take any? Even more odd.

They are not weak. They are very much a FINESSE army that utterly depends on knowing the enemy, and getting all the proper matchups. One mistake - even one bad combat - will cost a Bret army the game. And if you don't know the enemy because they have a brand-new book, a Bret is pretty much guaranteed get that bad combat, and therefore loose.
As the player gets to know what the army can do he will be able to hold his own. But playing brand-new Empire to Brets is like pitting the BFE High School football team against the winners of the Super Bowl. You already KNOW how the game will end.

Not really, not everyone plays an ogre netlist with double blasters.
Netlists are boring to play in fantasy, it's why we often end up with com rules against double HPA and double Hydra.

I don't play net lists, I don't hamper myself either which means taking the tools provided in the book. Not to mention they're sweet models that are fun to put together and paint. I have yet to meet an Ogre player who doesn't field Ironblasters but your scene may be full of people that like to fight with one hand tied behind their back.

There's nothing more fun than seeing someone laugh at your lack of X unit only to smash his face in with Y unit.
I take Ironblasters when I'm not running double maneaters. Or trying out my Gorger list.

You must play with some real winners if people are laughing because you don't bring a particular unit. IMO, Maneater lists are even more net and WAAC than a couple of fairly fragile ironblasters. Anyway, off topic; sorry all...

im an ogre player who dkesnt feield a blaster... i go leadbelchers instead... net lists dont especially work in fantasy as all units (especialy in the recent reases) are viable for something. so fantasy has become worth jt for the modeler aswell. making his army out of tbings he likes does not render it totally useless.

He had 1x Ironblaster in his list, however he was more concerned w/my Lvl. 4 on the Heavens-Mobile and shot at that for 2x turns before he blew himself up . But to be fair, at the time he had no idea that Hellblasters had improved that much since the old book, which played to my advantage. Hellblasters w/an Engineer to give them BS4 shots and rerolls in case of a misfire is just scary good.
