So I'd like to try running a Lord that isn't just a master necro.

Here is what I was thinking but I'd love some input on how it could be better or what caster lords you all have designed.

Vampire Lord, Shield, lv1, Sword of Bloodshed(+3A), Armor of Fortune(5+,5++), Red Fury, Beguile, Aura of Dark Majesty
408

That gives me 8 attacks plus red fury and in a challenge the enemy has to pass Ld-4 to not reroll successful hits.

Not very tough to kill. In a combat it can be reasonably assumed that I could get 9 str 6 shots with great weapons on the guy. He is targetable in melee and he's a big target so people will allocate lots of attacks on him (especially if you throw out 8+red fury str 5 attacks). Therefore only a 5+/5++ isn't that great.

I think vamp lords are much better on mounts because you can make him 1+/4++ with an enchanted shield, talisman of preservation, and +2 attacks sword on a barded nightmare. Sure you lose the extra attack but one attack wont kill you, having only a 5+/5++ on a vamp lord is a death sentence (a second one).

Putting him in a challenge wont do to great either as the opponent can just say no or he can accept and the vamp will only kill one model, regardless of the additional combat res thats a waste.

If you are leaving him a LVL 1 Ghoul Kings are the way to go IMO and a tad cheaper

Ghoul Kings are kick ass if you are not giving him more wards saves. He comes with a 5+ regenrate but he throws out a LOTT more attacks.

As a person who gets easaly impressed by a big display a huge offense is better then a huge defence. A ghould King with red fury, sword of bloodshed and a dragon bane gem can pump out an impresive 16 attacls a turn. It is unlikley that he does so, but I would not be surpiced if he really kicks ass. S5, poison and re-rolls to hit is all good. Throw in a potion of streangh for when you come up against those hard hitting units or a dispell scroll. You could play him more defensive also. I am shure there is a kidel way here that is really good.

You loose poisen if you take a magic weapon but that is beside the point

Tbh you can't build a Ghoul King to be that defensive even if you try, so don't even bother. He comes with Regen, so if you are worried about it your best bet is taking a Mortis Engine to buff it up to 4+ (which is the best Ward save you can get anyway) and then you just combine that with 2+ ward vs Fire. You can't get armour, so after that you are basically just trying to get something out of Fear/Terror to prevent people hitting in the first place. I did work out a rough Triple Terrorgheist list which would have been pretty fun to use, Ghoul King drops Ld and then 3 Screams per turn is going to eat through units pretty quickly. Armour wouldn't help much in this build anyway, since it isn't going to help against War machines. If you were really keen you could actually get 4 Screams in by taking Skabscrath as well.

@OP. If you are running a Vampire Lord that isn't Lvl 3 or 4 then you really need to leave enough points to take a Master Necromancer as well, otherwise you are at a serious disadvantage in the magic phase. Considering how much he costs the first thing you should really be taking on a Vampire Lord is a 4+ ward (no matter the build). Since you are mostly after the combat ability and increased durability in this case you are almost certainly going to be better off taking the Lord on a Barded Nightmare since it gets you up to a 2+ normal straight away and gives you mobility. A Lord with the Armour of Destiny on a Nightmare + a Lvl 3 Master Necro leaves you 135 points for magic items/Vampiric Powers.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll revise accordingly.

Lord, level 4, quickblood, red fury, sword of might, armour of.... fortune? (heavy armour and 4+ward), shield the other trixters shard, comes in at 493 pts, while pricey it does get the job done, sledgehammer style. He hangs out in 30 grave guard with great weapons and BOTB, and a wight king with the screaming banner.
