I've been wanting to read up on the post-heresy Alpha Legion but can't really seem to find much. Are there any good sources of info about them? I read on the stuff on Lexicanum and the Wiki, but there really wasn't that much. Granted I understand they are the most mysterious of the 20 original legions, but still, there's gotta be something.....

Thanks.

Inside Yvraine

People are going to say "Legion" by Dan Abnett.

But Legion's plot was like 85% random Indian-alegory guardsmen sleeping with each other, 10% random alien/human cabal action, and 5% actual screentime with the Alpha Legion.

I was seriously underwhelmed.

The Imperial Armour Siege of Vraks Parts 1, 2, 3 have Alpha Legion instigating a major Chaos uprising and you are introduced to a guy Arkos the Faithless, though he isn't seen very much (though there is a fun bit where he fights Dark Angels). Otherwise can't think of much.

Is Arkos a character you can put on the table? Or just a character in the fluff? I'll have to looking into the Siege of Vraks books. Thanks.

Just a character in the fluff. The Alpha Legion never got a tabletop character, which will hopefully be remedied in the new codex... But there's no fluff that I know of that features the AL as anything other than moustache twirlers post heresy.

Gramaticus was a brilliant character. READ LEGION, then judge.

IMHO Legion is well worth a read, especially the final few chapters you will learn more about the Legion, it certainly changed my perception. Geno-five-two-Chiliad was a very interesting setup and I enjoyed their strange organisation. it's a Marmite read, love or hate no middle ground i'm afraid.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

Is that book primarily about the Alpha Legion, or does it just feature them kind of in the background? One of the posters said they really aren't in that book very much and it's mostly about other things.

It's inter related, the whole point of the Alpha Legion is that they are the power behind the throne, the mysterious ones, the puppet masters, the intelligence gatherers and exploiters. It wouldn't be a great book to capture that just laid it all out plain as day to read, no mystique, no intrigue just wham bam here are the facts . You need to look deeper and more signifcantly and see what Abnett was doing with this, he was real-ling you in like a fish with the web of deceit lies and intrigue, sabotage, espionage, kidnapping and information denial. It captures their essence and MO better.

The Book is all about them, but its doesn't mean they feature 80% of the time. More like 20% but it's whether you can spot them operating.

One of the best books i think, but not if you like a throw away easy read.

Well, I guess I'll pick it up and read it (they got me, Blaxican) and see what I think about it.

Almost everything in Legion caused by the Alpha Legion or Cabal, but they only get seen directly a small amount of the time until the end. That's part of what made it brilliant in my opinion, you see their effects but not them, it's just like how the legion itself works.

They also feature briefly in Deliverance Lost, although Omegon comes across as a bit of a pussy and the end seems to throw out what was established at the end of Legion out the window.

If you're looking for GOOD Post-Heresy background in a novel about the Alpha Legion.... you're out of luck. There isn't any.

If you're looking for the best Pre-Heresy/Heresy baground, absolutely read LEGION.

Then be prepared to be disappointed by anything else you read about them written by anyone other than Abnett.

Dang, ANOTHER reason that booked sucks. The more I look back at that book the worse it gets. The AL still have a better story in that book than the RG.

I would say Corax whooping Lorgar's arse in The First Heretic is much better, and makes Lorgar look like a grade A coward.

On topic, read LEGION and then judge. They are definitely the most mercurial and enigmatic Chapter and should have a different Codex such as Renegades, with Astral Claws and all the other Non-imperial chapters like the Soul Drinkers that are not quite chaos.

Coward? Nah, at least he tried. He is kind of a pussy though, and Aurellian does nothing to change that.

On a boat, Trying not to die.

I would read Legion, check the Lexicanum article on them, and make sure you know all of the little injokes between them (See: I am Alpharius)

It's good to see someone besides Alpharius interested in Alpha Legion. Chaos is begin to grow!

There is ONE that I would consider excellent. Look for the story The Long Games of Carcharias in the Victories of the Space Marines anthology. Rob Sanders has really shown himself to take lesser detailed factions (Alpha Legion, Iron Warriors) and really make them shine.

There is no information. That legion does not exist. You were never here. We were never here. People who ask questions may mysteriously disappear in the middle of the night. You have been warned.

If it looks like a duck, moves like duck, quacks like a duck it's probably an Alpha Marine undercover.

Ah... maybe.

It really does seem that many BL writers/editors forget that LEGION exists.

Roboute may have despised Alpharius, but Alpharius ignored Roboute.

Still, that story did give us a pretty killer line about getting rid of Roboute's sons, a thousand at a time...

Actually, there are updated official IA rules for Arkos. You could easily just give him another name to make the character personal to your army. It's only for a Renegades and Heretics army though.
The rules for him are on the last page.

Basically...

Any GW or BL story you read of something awesome happening?

That was actually the Alpha Legion doing it. Every time.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
