Hey dakka, have a little situation. I have a friend of mine just starting to play the game with me and he has settled on space marines. He has a pretty decent core army at the moment and is planning on branching out from there. As far as I know he is going to be playing raven wing. Now my question, is it legal to use all the unique abilities and heroes of the dark angel codex AS WELL AS those found in the vanilla marine codex. I havnt really bugged him about it because because I don't want to be an ass and take fun away from the game, but at the same time.....isnt that kinda cheating?
Im just curious, Im not trying to start a heated debate or anything. Want to see how everyone else does it. Of course the main thing is having fun.

If he's using them both at the same time, thats not allowed. It's one codex or the other.
He can use either the Space Marine codex, or the Dark Angels codex, and can swap freely between the two if he wants, but he can't use both at the same time.
Also, if you dislike it that he skips from one to the other, don't be afraid to ask him to pick a codex and stick with it.

Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?" |

Pretty much, this^
The codexes are setup to work in and of themselves. The points values for certain units differ from marine books for a reason. Let your friend figure out which book is right for his play srltyle, then work from that book.

Agree with everything but this. There is no reason to limit someone to one army.
But yeah, one codex at a time.

Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee. |

No reason not to, either. Theres no reason to suffer in silence if it really grinds your gears that someone flips and flops over which codex to use their Marines with. If it bugs you, say so. I know I do.

Per game rules: 1 codex at a time.
However, just so you know, we often play mixed armies. For example Guard and Marines together. To try and make it fair, we have a rule that you have to meet the force org chart for each 'dex you bring. Meaning 1HQ+2Troops.
Ultimately, how you guys play the game is entirely up to you.

I appreciate the replies guys, thanks! It doesn't bug me if he flips back and forth between armies. I agree he shouldn't be limited to what he plays, I just didnt want to see marneus and sammael in the same army whooping it on. Answered my question, thanks all.

Outside of Apocalypse games (where it's A-okay to use your whole collections) you can only use one codex in any given game. If he wants to play a Ravenwing army one week then use the Space Marines codex for a regular Marine army with some bikers the next that's up to him.
