I've been toying with a second army for a while, and while I was pretty sure about Nomads, the Combined Army has lately taken my eye. However, I've come across issues just building an army. My original idea was a 150-200pt army to oppose my Haqqislam for friends to use and me to paint. The list I looked at included a few Morat infantry (one of which a lieutenant), a Zerat sniper, a doctor worm thing and a couple of drones, and something for flavour.

However, I keep hitting the SWC limit. Is this a common issue with Combined Army? Just with a Suryat with HMG, Zerat sniper and Morat leiutenant I seem to have exceeded the SWC for 200 points.

Afaik it's sort of a balance thingy. Cheap CA Lts cost additional SWC, and those that don't are very pricy pointswise. Once you start using expensive Lts it will be harder to meaningfully max swc without order starvation.
Either way CA is one of those factions were small points lists are hard to design.

The cheapest no-swc Lt is Skiavoros for 56 points. If you want a cheaper one take look at aswang, he is only 1 swc and not 2 swc as the morat. Having camo on Lt also helps him not to die so another plus. Other cheap Lts for only 1 swc are yaogat, noctifier and gwailo.

But Skiavoros is kinda great Lt. Strategos 2 (helps with order starvation!), mnemonica, mimetism, NWI, plasma rifle. Very little not to love about the guy.

Good to know. I might stick with the Morat Lt, and just not include as many interesting weapons.

It might be too early yet for you but you can also use the Morat Sectoral army. Just don't do a linked team. That's the only part that makes it advanced. Just because you are doing it doesn't mean you have to do a linked team. But by doing a sectoral you gain AVA on some troops and the SWC on some Lt. change as well. I do a Shasvastii Sectoral and the Aswang is 0 SWC in that, but 1 SWC in a regular CA list. All of the things you mentioned can be used in a Morat Sectoral force too. It just means you can can't have access to Shasvastii, Exrah, and EI troops. You can still have the doctor and drones.

I'm still wondering between these and Nomads for my second army.

I think Nomads just crept ahead because I had previously not seen the Prowler, Sin Eater and Zero models. And those are dead sexy.

Of course. But I'm really just planning my second army. It's easier to make a low point cost Nomad force, which is more ideal since it's for start games with friends.

I'll be doing a Combined army after that. There's too many awesome models not to. Morats, Zerats and Suryats all look badass, and the Caskuda is the best looking TAG in the game. And Avatars and Gwailos remind me of the aliens from FF: Spirits Within.

Epic match the other day, turn one a CA Autocannon one shots my Szalamandra TAG and an impersonator kills my Fuerbach remote. By the game's end I have killed a Anathematic with my Alguacile and the final showdown is a sole Alguacile vs a Charonid.

Alguacile takes plasma to the face... and live! However his combi got shutoff by the E/M. He stared down the Charontid winning FtF twice over 3 turns with his little pistol, but couldn't get a wound through before he succumbed to another plasma round to the face.

A testimate to how fantastic Infinity match can be.
