Lorewise the biggest change from Oblivion to Skyrim has been the near annialation of the Empire from when it was ruled by the Septims. Where before they had all of Tamriel, they have lost or could potentially lose all of their provinces; even Skyrim the birthplace of the Imperial founder stands ready to be lost.

 List of Provinces
  * Summerset Isle to the Thalmor
  *Valenwood to the Thalmor
*Elswyr a vassal to the Thalmor
*Hammerfell leaves the Empire after the White-Gold Concordat cedes half of Hammerfell to the Thalmor
*Black marsh revolted and made its own kingdom
*Morrowind exploded and was conquered by the Argonian Kingdom
*High Rock-in control of the Empire but being amrauded by Corsairs
*Skyrim-in the balance could be lost

That leaves the list of allies pretty thin. Indeed calling the Empire an Empire is getting pretty difficult as of Skyrim. I can only see this going two ways, either the Empire goes like Rome and is confined to Cyrodil leaving independent kingdoms. Or they do a DLC Second Great War where Dovahkin single handedly destroys the high elves and the Empire returns to its hegemony.

Because Dovahkiin is just that awesome.

What does everyone think? Is this just a passing phase in Elder Scrolls lore or have Bethesda's story bewen that from the end of Oblivion the Empires reason for existence ended (to light the dragonfires under the Divines) and it began to collapse. They also seem to be really pushing the Humans vs Elves theme much more than Oblivion. I personally like the idea as its more grey and I never liked how easily the races in Oblivion accepted being under the Empire. However I kind of like the Empire surviving like Byzantium; which it kind of already is.

So what does everyone think Bethesda is going to role with?

Yeah, when a bunch of cultist dickbags can kill yer emperor without that much trouble, the empire is on the down spiral. Tiber Septim would have shouted the whole mythic dawn straight into the sun, no problems.

That and Uriel Septim ## Had been Emperor who provided the protagonist of every Elder Scrolls since Arena unless I'm mistaken. He was a long standing Character, even if he didn't really do much in some games. Him dying was pretty big.

That, and I think we should all mourn. Of all the captains, Piccard was clearly the superior officer.

I reckon they will just roll with either:

  a) No more empire, rebellions everywhere.

b)50/50 split in land between the elves and men.

  c) Huge war between the two, still undecided (aka next game/dlc is based on warfare between the two.)

That, and they wont drop the Thalmor very soon. I think that the next game will be Altmora/Summerset Isle.

I thought the Altmer had killed all non-Altmer/those without pure blood on the Summerset Isles. Would sort of mitigate doing Summerset. You being the only non-Altmer would be pretty jarring.

You also forgot the beast races. Elsywr (Khajit) is a vassal to the Thalmor whilst Morrowind is owned by an Argonian Kingdom (pretty bad if you're a Dark Elf at the minute). I like how they're making the human/elf split a bit grey ( lol) since dark elves and orcs are still part of the Empire but the former especially are getting a lot of flak by association. Theres also all of the dispersed minority populations who have nothing to do with any faction and just want to get on with things. Quite an interesting set-up.

I wonder if the Dark Elves will get Morrowind back or if the Argonians are going to go Lizardman Empire?

The loss of morrowind was a bit of a low blow to some of the fans (myself included) I think, but you could see it coming especially since

its interesting the way the Thalmor systematically picked off the empire's allies one by one took the WEs and Kajhits, then incited the argonians to knock off the empire's ally the Dark elves, even the war started because the High Elves wanted hammerfell. Its clear from notes in their embassy that they consider either side winning the civil war to be a bad thing, so even without the empire they're clearly worried about a unified skyrim.

I just read the Book of the Dragonborn in the torture chamber at the start of the game. It pretty assertively states that EVERY Emperor before Uriel was Dragonborn and from the very beginning connected with the rulers of the Empire. Its a gift granted by Akatosh to light the dragonfires and whenever the line died out another dragonborn appeared to take the mantle ie Tiber Septim. Do you think they might do that. I mean you ARE the Divines chosen avatar and every legitimate Emperor has always had the dragonblood. Be pretty interesting if they did some DLC about that.

Dovahkiin's awesomeness could surely defeat the Thalmor and reunite Tamriel. You don't even need to be Imperial. Talos was a Nord after all.

Well it kind of depends what you did in Skyrim; If you joined the Stormcloaks, then you pretty much just feth the Empire, and they end up like Rome. But if you joined the Imperial Legion, then you could theoretically work your way up to a high rank and start retaking lands for the Empire. I mean, you took down a dragon that was gonna eat the entire world, so some fething elves shouldn't be that much of an issue.

Problem would be that the Empire would get in an open war, and thats exactly what you dont want to happen.
