Subject: Interest in Custom, 3D Printed Bitz?
|

I was told to post this question here, so:
Would anyone be interested in giving me requests for custom pieces? I would like to work on both my 3D modeling and my printing skills, and this seems like a pretty great way to improve both. I can't guarantee anything, but I can say it will be free for the moment because the plastic is cheap enough and I would feel bad charging for something with no concrete time frame.
For clarity: I own a 3D printer, and I can print a pretty good range of things, but I'd like to tweak it for very precise printing. And I'd like to make something cool in the process. I'm asking GW right now if they have any problem with this, but as long as you're not asking me to directly replicate an existing model, it should be fine. So, if you're interested, let me know what piece you think would be pretty sweet to have, and I'll do my best to model it, print it, and show you how it turned out. If you want, I'll mail it to you too.
I posted this here because I'm gauging interest before I put a full sort of request on the swap shop. I'd like to get started on this though, so let me know soon if you want something.
I hope this appeals to you guys, let me know what you want!
Thanks,
-z

Its your first post.
You have no portfolio.
You have no prices.
You think GW will be cool with it.
Seems Legit.
Seriously, pics.

Quick note on the price before I crank out some good printed pieces for you to see: free. Honestly, this plastic costs 5 cents a gram if you buy it from the wrong person, and I want to push my printer to new levels of production. So, for the moment (read, essentially forever, unless this garners major interest), I am offering this at zero cost to you. Send me your idea over a PM or reply to this post, and I will start working on it. MIT students need distractions too. Also, thank you for that comment, I definitely will put up some photos of the objects I can print (keep in mind, I am doing this as a way to fine-tune my printer for smaller models).
Thanks,
-z

What kind of printer do you have? I’ve got my own I’m just curious what other people are using.

Hey everyone!
I'm really sorry about the delay in pictures. I've been a bit busy this week, and rather than stock models I wanted to get something custom out for you guys just to show what's possible. On that note, if you want a general idea of what 3D printers like mine can do (A thing-o-matic, by the way), please look at
www.thingiverse.com
Which is where tons of people post their models and what they print. It really shows the range of printers' capabilities better than I could, so if you're curious, please have a look.
Next, I got a LOT of PMs after the first batch, which is again, really great. Any of you who I have not responded to yet, please send me the following information so that I can get a better idea of what you're looking for
1. Any sort of size, scale, specific information about the part. I only have a few SM troops here, so I am really off-scale for anything else, and need specifics! Let me know what you're looking for.
2. As much detail as you want. I am totally cool with being told exactly the symbol you want to recreate, or exactly the type of thing you were looking for. In fact, it's pretty helpful to have a reference, so if you have a specific idea, I'd love to hear it.
3. Not really a request but I promise I will PM you back, hopefully by later today, and at least by Tuesday.
And finally, a couple updates to anyone who's reading this thread for the first time and still interested:
1. I can do larger pieces, terrain and the like, but probably won't do them first because A) they take longer and B) they use more plastic. Still, I am starting an objective for one person, so similar requests are totally cool.
2. I was looking to do bits for two reasons, both that it's easier to model a single part and because printing these gets REALLY legally gray area once I print whole models. I got lots of shoulder-pad requests though, so I might end up building an entire model over time, which you can ask about.
3. I got so many requests, as you can probably see above, that for a non-profit free-time activity, it's going to take a while. Rather than charge for this and drop out of school, this just means that if you PM me, I will respond to you and ask about your stuff, but I don't know if/when I'll ever get to it. But I would still love to see these ideas, and if you have a part request that's similar to one I've already gotten, I'll probably be able to get to you faster.
I'll keep updating, but thank you all for the interest and the crazy cool ideas. I'll find somewhere to stick all the images if I can start printing out these requests. It's good to be busy.
Also, sorry for listing everything off, it sounds kind of callous. I just didn't want this to be an awful wall of text.
Thanks,
-z
