Story first, a few years ago now I brought a bunch of Necrons, they were assembled but mostly unpainted and I played a few games before 5th ed. came out with some great successes, I used to love the old Gauss rules! 5th edition was on the horizon and I heard that the new rules were going to make things difficult for my newly risen Necron force. Couple that with a late 4th edition release of an awesome Orc codex and the deal was done. The 'crons were stored and I was officially a switcher. Then I switched again, to Space Marines!

Fast forward to 2012 and I have recently found my old Necrons in storage. The bug had bitten again so I brought the new codex. I ended up benching my Marines for a little while so I could finish this force off.

What I now have is a fully painted (admittedly only tabletop) Necron backbone comprised of the following:

5x Destroyers (2 heavy)
10x Scarabs
50x Warriors

Some of these were in various states of primed/non-primed and base coated. But you get the point, it was mostly a psychological clean slate re-start. I wish that I had taken on this stance while working on my other current project of Marines, but never mind. I am so happy that all I need to worry about now are the heavy hitters and leaders for this force.

These have been painted as follows. Chaos Black undercoat, drybrush Boltgun Metal, base coat the carapaces in Red Gore, few highlights and shading, pick out eyes with Scorpion Green, few details in gold, white faceplates, ink washes with old skool green and black inks. This scheme was ultra quick and I am actually quite happy with the results.

I now face the dilemma of running out of all of these old paints/inks and need to substitute with the new range. Just a small hurdle that should be irrelevant as I plan to put far more work into the rest of the force. Consistency with the existing models was the key.

Anyways, some pics.

My Scarab tar pit of doom

Destroyers (heavies in background)

First squad of Warriors (15)

Second squad of warriors (15)

Third squad of warriors (10)

Fourth squad of warriors (10), these are the oldest ones, basic painting from back int he day

Now for some of my favourite models, just battle damaged Warriors

This guy just had his arm severed and head a bit messed up, inspiration for this was Terminator when Arnie gets smacked and then looks nothing but pissed off

Different angle where you can see the arm still attached to the Flayer

Another severed arm Warrior, not quite as dynamic, but I like him

And my definite favourite, I like to think of him as being cut down by some upstart Space Marine. As he turns around my warrior is picking himself back up and about to blast him in his back. Note foot standing on ground in front of the warrior

Now for the questions. What should I add to this force? A vanilla Overlord? Named characters? I like the look of Deathmarks and Immortals, which are best to use and in what configuration/squad size? Is there anything that slips into a counter-assault role within the codex? Lychguard look very nice. Thinking about getting two Ghost Arks for the two ten man squads of Warriors and having the two 15's foot slogging. I haven't play tested my Necron's at all so would appreciate any C&C as I have never been in the position of having finished my painting of the rank and file and then just having to focus on the cool stuff, which I see there being a lot of in this new range

Cheers for reading.

Nate
