Well...what sort of play style are you wanting to go for with the VCs? Theres so many different options in the book, and while I won't build you a list from scratch - because doing it youself gives you experience in list building - I can make suggestions based on the style you're wanting.

What Pete said.
However, since you are all new, I guess you don't really know what your options are.
If you are buying the Battalion and a Vampire... Well, regarding units, you won't have much choice, but the Vampire can be kitted out in a lot of ways. So how do you want your vamp?

Travel Guard?
Anyways, if you're wanting to raise loads of zombies, you're honestly better off fielding multiple low level Necromancers than using one Vampire Lord to do it. This also has some tactical benefits too - the guys using Lore of Vamps can halt the complete crumbling of your army if the vampire gets killed, so its helpful to have a couple Necros to keep the ranks replenished and stop that nasty crumbling.

Given how well Necromancers work in the new book, I personally wouldn't ever try to make a Vampire Lord a pure magic user. They're far better suited to other roles, while allowing the Necromancers to raise the zombies etc,
