So can someone please explain to me how these work? The rules are super confusing.
Minelayers secure their force’s deployment zone by placing Mines in close proximity to prevent the approach of enemy troopers. During Deployment, figures possessing this Special Skill can place inside their ZC a Camo Marker which represents a camouflaged Mine, or a Marker representing the deployable weapon with which he is equipped (E/Mauler, Deployable Repeater…).
It may not be placed if any enemy troop is inside the area of effect of the deployable weapon. If the figure deploys using the Infiltration Special Skill and fails the PH roll, then a Mine Marker will be placed instead of a Camouflage marker. The Minelayer Special Skillis automatic and it does not require the spending of any Orders or the making of any rolls. The deployed weapon or equipment must be deducted from those carried by the figure.
So... err.. what?
If my unit has Infiltration I can try and place my mines with PH rolls at the start of the match? Oooor I can place them in my starting zone at the start of the game. Ooor I can keep them and deploy them in the field without making a roll?

Lol here is a simple breakdown.
You have two things to keep straight. Models with mines, and models with mines and "Minelayer" special rule. Often times people get mixed up.
Minelayer special rule allows a model with mines to place one out during deployment within 8" of the model. So if the minelayer is a camo model (which I think they all are) you place 2 camo markers wihtin 8" of each other, one is the model and one is a mine.
You can use this to conceal you true numbers, use it to block off an obvious path, or jsut to play a deadly game of ball in a cup.
The Infiltration portion is only for when you try to use Infiltration's special ability to attempt to push up further into your opponent board half. If you fail the PH check then instead of placing a camo marker for the mine, you place the actual mine marker.

Mine layers are great for diversions. Mines in infinity are a dream for todays military. It has FOF recognition so you don't have worry about your own guys near it.
The one problem with mines is keeping track of them! Write down on your army sheet the numbers for your camo guy and the ones for your mines.
Remember mines start out as a camo marker and then have to be discovered. Great for making the enemy use up his orders.

Yeah, thats why I ask, since my Muyibs get the Minelayer rule when you take Mines, but none of them have Camo or Infiltration.
I have found that possibly running a Link Team of Muyibs is also an option, but that's for another discussion.
So when I start a game, I can place ONE mine as a Camo marker within 8" of the Minelayer, but it has to be in my deployment zone. So it's just one mine, the other two I can then place later on in the game as a Short Action?

Correct.
Muyibs don't have Infiltration of any sort, so the part about PH rolls and such don't apply to them.
When you deploy your Muyib for the first time, you have the option of placing a mine (camouflaged) as if your Muyib deployed it before the game even began.
Later in the game, your Muyib may place the remaining 2 mines as a short action. (EDIT: One at a time, of course).

Another good job for mines is covering your back. Since you don't have to worry about hurting yourself you can put them even right next to yourself. So if any Jump troops or something comes down in your back end they will have to deal with the mine.

Additionally, mines and minelayers can be used to hide your other camouflaged troops.
Infinity has many opportunities for bluffing.
If your opponent deploys a Muyib with a camo marker near it, you'll assume it's a mine. When you move closer to it, the camo marker reveals itself to actually be a Tuareg or other camouflaged troop.

The majority are, but Acontecimento Regulars, Muyibs and Bagh-Mari don't get camo deployment but have minelayer options.
