Newbie Necron’s first tournament, Blood Angels vs. Necrons (3/3)
For part 2: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/441061.page
So this is the third and final battle report of my recent tournament at my FLGS. We were once again running 1000 points, and I was placed against the only marine player of the day (to my surprise). He was a younger player, somewhere around 16, and a little bit spazzy, but, a nice enough guy. He was also in first place according to the rankings, tied with an imperial guard mech player whom I did not get to face.

Once more, my list was the following at 1000 points
Overlord w/ Scythe, Orb, Armor, Shifter, MSS, Arrow
x2 Cryptek 1 w/ Pulse x2/ lance
x3 8 man warrior squads
x5 Lychguard
x8 Scarab Bases

My Opponent brought the heavy hitter list (Shudder) I thought I was toast right away.
Mephiston
Land Raider Redeemer
9 death company with CCW and pistols
10 man tac squad, combat-squads of 5, one with a missile launcher, I can’t remember what the second had.
Pre-game
Man, he brought out the CC beatstick and the heavy armor. Geeez. I better hope my scarabs can deal with the landraider that has two flamstorm cannons, I’m going to need the rest of my army to deal with Mephiston and those death company.

The map was actually the same as in my first battle report, a pillar in the middle of the map, another farther down, and a few small mole hills dotted about.
We get spearhead deployment, and 3 objectives for capture and control. He wins the roll-off, placing one objective in the back of his deployment zone, I do the same, placing mine in the back of my deployment zone on a hill with a good field of view for shooting.
He places the final objective on top of one of the pillars in his deployment zone, I challenged him on this, saying it was impassible terrain, but being on a time limit and the tournament organizer embroiled in another fierce debate, we let the dice decide, and he put it up there after winning that.

Deployment
The necron army arrayed itself on the hills overlooking the battlefield, the lychguard and overlord hunkered down behind a line of warriors and crypteks. The scarabs also hide, preventing LOS for his missile launchers. A 8 man warrior squad babysits my back objective.

The blood angels combat squads both deploy on objectives…his 5 man squad on top of a 2 foot tall pillar that can barely fit them all. The other is in a bunker in the far end of the field.
The land raider and Mephiston both start in the open, with lots of room to move.
In an odd choice, he starts the death company on the far end of his formation, attempting to flank around my formation and I assume steal my objective.

I attempt to steal initiative, and fail miserably with a one (man, just no luck right now with the dice huh….lets see if I can make up for that.

Turn 1 Blood Angels
Movement
“BY THE BLOOD OF SANGUINIOUS! CHARGE! OVERWHELM THEM!”
I pop my solar pulse
His death company, land raider and Mephiston all rocket forward 12 inches, the death company starting to go wide, as I had anticipated. Mephiston and the land raider are heading right for my lines.

Shooting
He attempts to draw LOS from his missile launcher to my scarabs, and fails
His land raider fails its night fighting rolls, unable to locate targets in the all-consuming darkness
Mephiston runs, definitely in range for an assault next turn.
Death company fail miserably, and shuffle forward an inch.

Assault
N/A

Turn 1 Necrons
“See…They come, bring them the death they so eagerly seek…”
Movement
My lychguard shuffle around, anticipating where Mephiston will charge, however, staying behind warriors.
My scarabs move around the hill, getting closer to the land raider, but still being a good ways away.

Shooting.
Crypteks raise their ancient staves, and warriors raise their gauss rifles as one, two squads opening fire on the Lord of Death. Causing all of one wound. (grreaaattttt)
Lychguard run an inch or so forward, making sure they will be in counter-charge range, later a mistake I figured, as I could have fired the Tachyon arrow at Mephiston.

Assault
N/A

Turn 1 Analysis.
Nottt as much damage as I had hoped. All of one wound for the whole turn. Next turn is gonna hurt

Turn 2
“The sun shines upon the Blood Angels! I have reached our cowardly foe! Slaughter them!” Cries the Lord of Death. The battle cry is echoed by the death company surging forward.
Mephiston moves to point blank range. No way will he be unable to assault.
Land Raider moves into position on my right flank, moving six inches, but I think he is out of flamer range.
The death company continue to flank wide, having passed my flank at this point.

Shooting
Mephiston attempts to use his blood lance, power gathering at his mighty fingertips, but then it fizzles out, perhaps some Necron trickery (he failed to manifest his power…lol)
Death company run an inch…directly towards my line.
Land raider opens up on my warriors on the hill overlooking the battle field. Killing 4, three rise after threats from the overlord, threatening unending agony behind them keep them in good order.
A missile is fired from the perched tac squad, drifting to no effect.

Assault
“DIE XENOS SCUM! FEEL MY WRATH!”
Mephiston charges into a full squad of warriors and a cryptek. He manifests his powers to re-roll hits and wounds, and increase his strength to 10, Hacking down 5 warriors. The squad cannot touch the god of death, but know their place, and stay in the fight. 3 warriors re-assemble their sundered bodies in a macabre display of carnage surrounding the lord of death.

Necrons turn 2
Movement
“Hold…the line! Lychguard, fulfill your vows…with me!” The overlord grates, starting forward towards the brutal melee.

The warriors all hold fast, unable to really target anything of worth, and unable to target the whirling death in their ranks.
Scarabs hustle forward, inches from the land raider.

Shooting
Cryptek and warriors fire on the land raider, hoping to score some glancing hits on the land raider, to no effect, as the mighty war machine shrugs off the fire.

Warriors on the back try to see if they in range of the death company marines, they are well out of range.

Assault
“Now…die mortal” The overlord raises his scythe in a salute to the Space marine ravaging the necron line.
The lychguard charge into the melee with Mephiston, whom once again gives himself re-rolls and strength 10. My opponent then asks me a curious question, if my overlord is a IC or not, to which I of course reply yes. He targets all his attacks on the Overlord (shrug)
After all things are settled, I fail one invulnerable save, and the overlord is cleaved in two. His bodyguards then surround and hack the space marine to pieces, causing 5 wounds to him, and killing him. A bright light flashes as the body of the overlord then knits itself back together.
He spares a glance down to his defeated foe “Only human.”

In the real world, My opponent nearly had a 16 year old IC aneurism.

The lychguard put themselves closer to being between the death company and my shooters, while the warriors move to get range on his tac squad.

Scarabs charge the land raider, and whiff horribly, only stripping one armor value, and are now right in the sights of two flamestorm cannons.

Turn 2 analysis
Well, Mephiston is down, even though I feel like I cheated death a bit there, that or the law of averages, whichever. However I made up for my good luck by failing to do anything of consequence to the land raider.

Turn 3.
“Mephiston! No! Marines! Fight to his body! Maybe he can still be saved! Cries the senior Sergeant in the tac squad.”
Land raider moves to make sure the scarabs cannot auto-hit if they survive.
Death company move forward, getting closer to my line.
His tac squad can’t run, its ontop of 24 inches of impassable terrain.

Shooting
Tac squad takes some long range pot shots with their bolters and missile. They drop two warriors in the weakened squad from Mephiston’s assault.
Death company fail on their run roll to get through difficult terrain, saving me from their charge, the marines growl with frustration as they fail to spill blood.
The land raider unleashes hell on my scarabs, killing all but two bases
Assault
N/A

Turn 3 Necrons
Movement
“Their leader is gone…take care of the maddened ones, and their vehicle, and the day is ours.” Says the overlord to his troops. His movement still jerky and imperfect as his body continues to recover from the powerful blow from the warrior earlier.

My two warrior squads walk towards the death company.
My lychguard and overlord move towards the death company with the warriors, between the two squads.
My scarabs move around behind the land raider, at least being able to make him turn his guns around and away from the rest of his army to deal with them.

Shooting
Two squads of warriors, one with a cryptek rapid fire into the death company, killing 3 of the 9 warriors.
My final warrior squad once more tries to deal damage to the land raider, glancing with the cryptek lance, and blowing off its’ assault cannon.

Assault
My lychguard pass difficult terrain, and charge into the death company as they attempt to extract themselves from the craggy rocks. Despite being caught in a bad state, and under fire, they manage to kill two lychguard. Power weapons flare and blood flies as power weapons scythe through power armor, cutting down the 6 remaining warriors.
They consolidate directly backwards 6 inches towards the land raider, the overlord’s scythe my best chance to take it down.
Scarabs do slightly better, dropping the land raider’s armor to 11 on all facings

(What in the world is going on? Necrons beating Blood Angels in assault?)

Turn 3 Analysis
Well, that went swimmingly. I’ve taken only a few casualties, and his two CC beatsticks are gone, I gotta push now to actually make anything of this, since my opponent IS up 2-1 at the moment.

Turn 4 Blood Angels
“Land Raider Angelicus! Burn their mongrel hides!”
Movement
The Land raider pulls a highly odd move, getting right between the scarabs and the warriors firing on it, with flamestorm cannons facing each squad.
His tacs are still unable to move

Shooting
Land raider finishes off the scarabs, also inflicting 3 casualties on my warriors, only one is intact enough to re-assemble itself from the near puddle of molten metal, (terminator-style)

Assault
N/A

Turn 4 Necrons
“All units, advance, pattern 126, their tank is mine”
Movement
Warriors all advance on the tac squad holding the objective that I can’t get to.
Lychguard get moving towards the land raider.
My final warrior squad moves back onto my objective (can’t forget that!)

Shooting
Two damaged warrior squads open fire on the 5 man tac squad on the pillar, causing 2 casualties, including his missile launcher. They don’t however break and fall to their deaths.

Assault
My overlord is just BARELY in range for an assault, my opponent asked for a re-measure, and then measured it himself, however I was about 1 cm from being out of range, the rest of his squad did not make it, but it was enough, the scythe flashes, carving through the tracks and armor, and reducing the proud machine to a smoldering wreck.
Emerging from the wreckage, his eyes and scythe ablaze, the overlord proclaims.
“This is an affirmation that we, the Necrontyr are the true inheritors of the galaxy. The time…of man…is at an end.”

Turn 4 Analysis.
I think I’ve got this one in the bag. I’ve got 3 lychguard, my overlord, and plenty of warriors, I think I got this, but I need extra turns to reach any kind of effective range on the tac squad in the back and make them run, I certainly can’t get a scoring unit there in time.

Turn 5 Blood angels
“Keep firing! Keep Firing!”
Movement
Nothing moves

Shooting
Bolters bark and drop two warriors, one stands back up as the warriors advance, knowing no fear.

Assault
N/A

Turn 5 Necrons
“Continue the advance. No survivors”
“Yes, Yes my lord.”
Movement
Warriors move into rapid fire range of the closest tac squad, my lychguard move into position to get a line of sight on the far tac squad.

Shooting
The two warrior squad rapid fire, destroying the final tac marines on the impassible terrain objective, leaving it unclaimed.
My overlord fires his tachyon arrow at the tac squad, pulverizing their Sergeant, they do not break and run.

Assault.
N/A

Well, I can win this thing if I can get more shooting in. He rolls a big yellow die, and the game ends a draw, his four remaining tactical marines holding his objective, my warriors holding mine. Nobody I have can get to the final objective.

Final 1-1 draw

Post game
This really ought to not have been a draw, the dice and my tactics left me with most of my army intact at the end of the game, however, the questionable placement of that objective made it so no other outcome was possible.
Still, I congratulated my opponent, as he tied for 1st place in the tournament with the IG. I ended up being the big winner of the day with best painted army (I am editing the pictures now, they’ll be up soon I promise.) Since the prize was split between the two 1st place winners, and the two best attitude awards tying as well. (Tau from the 2nd game I played and Necrons from 1st game I played)
Overall, this was a great experience, which enhanced my appreciation of the hobby. I look forward to the one at the end of this month.
Thank you for reading my reports everyone, I hope they were enjoyable.

I am extremely puzzled as to why your opponent would run the Death Company out of the Land Raider. Did you ask?

I did, he didn't really give a solid answer. I would have run them in there myself had I been using his army.

Though, it was a pity you forgot about the Tach Arrow until the end of the game. It could have made all the difference between getting rid of the Landraider or Mephiston early on.
(also, was it my imagination, or did you forget about the Mindshackle Scarabs?)

Regardless, well played, you should have won that thing...

Totally forgot the mindshackle scarabs in the report, they only worked once in the assault vs. the death company.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying these! I'll be happy to write up another as soon as time allows. Thanks for reading!

Great report, and grats on painting! hope to see the pics of the army soon (go blood angels!)

We are winged salvation, but we are a terrible, final salvation, and our wings embrace the horizon with fire. We are the Blood Angels. To confront us is to die, and death is my remit, my reality, my unbounded domain. I have known death, and defeated it, claimed it as my own. To my cost, to my strength, death is my one gift to bestow, and I am nothing if not generous.

Real characterful, lots of personality, especially given the fact we're talking about a horde of automatons!

Did you come away with any big impressions or any feelings about direction?

I feel like I learned a thing or two about how much better some gamers are, these matches were some of the hardest I've had to fight. It definitely reinforced my enjoyment of the game, and made me want to keep playing, that is for sure! I also got the feeling that I need some wraiths once the models come out.

As far as wraiths, spiders and scarabs go, I'd take a look at puppetswar dot eu.
They've done some really neat sculpts and you wont find a better price.

What are your thoughts on the liche guard now? And the relative lack of tesla and vehicles in your force?

I'm always too scared to run foot warrior squads. I just don't see them being useful enough of the game without some whacky support. It's nice to see someone trying out the mid sized blobs.

I think the lychguard most always get their points back, the "Whole squad full of power weapons with invulns" hurts just about everything pretty badly.
As far as the tesla goes, it worked fine the only time i've used it with an Annihilation Barge in my latest report, but I don't really miss it per-se.

The vehicles? I guess I wouldn't mind having more them, I've been on a budget. But I've had good results thusfar with my Barge and Monolith, despite nobody liking the monolith anymore

It comes from me getting into Necrons during 3rd edition, so the footslogging force is kinda the theme I got into.
Ideally at higher points, I'd have a 20-man squad for advancing and firepower, and two small squads to take "safe" objectives.
