It's not too bad, I would say. SM are a good fleet for learning the fundamentals of BFG, in that they are not a faction that "breaks" the conventions of the game like the Eldar or Necrons do. They used to be on a bit of a lower power level compared to the Imperial Navy or Chaos, but the 2010 updates have gone a long way towards leveling the playing field it seems like.

They're not bad for a starting force, it might do you well to get some IN ships too tho, they can be more forgiving starting off and space marines can bring IN ships (Armageddon sector fleet list and the dominion fleet list allow for mixed fleets).

I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

Sounds like fun
My necron BFG fleet need somthing to kill after the BFG necron ban at my club. The space marines are sort of meh when it comes to BFG. Since most people think the necrons are OP (they just dont know how to counter it) the current cheese army is tau and tyranids the nids have unlimited range if I am correct. The Tau is just overkill but very few people play them in BFG (not to mention barley anyone plays BFG anymore) space marines are all about boarding enemy vessels. Space marines are better with boarding. I am scared to ask about grey knights I have seen them on forgeworld and am scared that they will steam roll me.
I suggest orks btw. Are fun good for ramming and fun to use. The ships are better than dark eldar paper ships with that floor it thing they got.

GK have some rules in the 2010 FAQ but for the most part they are just a different model than the horrible pure metal one on the GW site.

Sigh... is there a way to get the forgeworld ship rules without buying the Imperial Armor books - I have heard that there are a ton of BFG ships inside those books?

I'm not sure about a "ton"...from what I recall looking through the books at stores there were maybe a half dozen in the two recent IA books that covered the Badab-adab-adu wars.

Considering that all the other rulebooks for BFG are free I really wouldn't feel right complaining about the FW book costs.

I assume you also play 40k, you probably would be able to use the 40k portions of the IA book too so its not like you are paying the price just for the BFG stuff.

Use The 2010 FAQ: it allows you to upgrade your shields and mix up their weaponry. It also has 2 lists, one lets you have a Fortress-Monastery and the other allows you to take some Imperial Navy ships. failing that try and get the Fanatic issue due to the cheaper strike cruisers without the options.

In one off games two squadrons of two strike cruisers one squadon of three sc and a barge with MotF. Focus on shutting down the enemy with critical hits, four waves of resilient assault boats (six, four, four, and three) that cannot fail a hit and run coupled with the fact that bombardment cannons cause crits on a four plus means you can force almost any enemy to disengage long before the fleet is actually crippled. I would insist on using the correct ruling in regards to weapons that use the gunnery chart (ships and squadrons can fire their weapons batteries place blast markers for any hits then fire the bombardment cannons and not suffer a column shif as the weapons are considered to have been fired at the same time).

For upgrades I reccomend every Strike Cruiser have the additional shield upgrade.

Then 1/2 your Strike Cruisers should swap their Hangers for Bombardment cannons. It makes them truly devestating, especially at close range.

The others should just be normal. Use Thunderhawk Annhilators to pound enemy ships, preferably at the same time as some Torpedos from your Battlebarge. Your opponent will need to choose between shooting the Thunderhawks and Torpedos.

A good 1500 point fleet I usually play around with is

Seditio Opprimere (MOTF - Master of the Fleet)

Strike Cruiser + Shield

Strike Cruiser + Shield

Strike Cruiser + Shield

Strike Cruiser + Bombardment Cannon

Strike Cruiser + Bombardment Cannon

Gladius

Gladius

Gladius

Gladius

Gladius

I also kinda Like this (the only diff is that all strike cruisers now get extra shield and the gladius' get switched for Swords):

Seditio Opprimere (MOTF - Master of the Fleet)
3 Strike Cruisers w/extra shield
2 Bombard Strike Cruisers w/extra shield
5 Swords

If people play BFG, you should be able to use those lists.

Ive got myself the IA10 it includes a few nice Ships. The Nicor is just one example. Its fast as a Chaos Cruiser, got the structure of a Grand cruiser, one more shield than a battleship and its armor is like a strike cruiser one's. Some special Rules as well, and its nicely armed.

Is there a more... internet-y free version that someone can pm me that I can find these new ship rules

EDIT: Never mind... Found it. I like the rules for my Strike Cruiser (with extra shield and bombardment cannon)... the newer rules are a bit OP...

The IA10 BFG rules are for the Forgeworld Tau models which are available at the sg website as a pdf + fleet list. Fleet list is not in the IA10 book.

For the IA book with the Nicar:
I read all the rules (in a thread at the sg website) I found 90% of them to be sh*tty and crappy,.
