Since you are looking for suggestions for the next update and you are updating this sort of stuff anyway:

I know we can add articles to our watchlist but i never/rarely use that section of the website because it's so detached from the forum. If i could subscribe to an article like a thread then i'd be more inclined to visit them. They could also use some level of discussion that didn't involve the clunky method of visiting the article discussion forum. A comments section maybe with room for big discussions like a thread.

Not sure the best way to go about that but it would be really useful.

The other thing is sort of bolted on to that. I think it would be really good if you could subscribe to a whole sub forum or section of articles. There are a lot of sub forums and most people have certain areas they like to keep up to date with and others they just avoid. The other solution would be control over your own 'homepage.' In other words you have your own homepage and you can control what appears on it, subscriptions, news feed, sub forums, friends, profiles, watched articles, my threads, etc.

It's all pretty extensive coding but i think the benefits would be amazing. Looking forward to hearing what you think.
Casey.

Edit: Just another idea i had. It would be sweet if there was an icon next to private messages you have already replied to. Most email systems have this function and it would be equally useful on Dakka. For instance i am aware that some of the MODs have to use the flashing 'unread' warning which isn't very useful if they have opened the message. I'm sure the rest of Dakka experience the same issues although to a lesser degree.
