they arnt really worth the points

chaplins are expensice use librarians or captains

if you want long range weapons then go devistators and remember if the sargent doesnt shoot everyone else gets bs 5

also vehicals or transports would be nice because if an ig with meltagun spam came along they would have more melta guns then your ift squad and you would die from that so vehicals trasports and more infantry

Too many toys, not enough boys.

At 1000 points you don't need 2 HQ, 1 is enough and the default for Codex Marines is a Librarian. He brings psychic protection and a selection of useful psychic powers.

Tactical squads do not fight well in combat, so giving them a power fist is generally pointless.

A better combination would be sergeant with combi-melta, a meltagun and either a missile launcher or lascannon. They should also have a Rhino. Two of these squads would allow you to combat squad, leaving the lascannons to shoot while the squad advances up the board, or remain together and be a little more resilient.

You could take a small Sternguard squad, but drop the power fist and take a Rhino to stick them and the Librarian in.

Vanguard are very very expensive for what they do.

I would suggest something more like.

Librarian
5 Sternguard, Rhino
10 Tactical Marines, lascannon, meltagun, combi-melta, Rhino
10 Tactical Marines, lascannon, meltagun, combi-melta, Rhino

As your core infantry. That takes up 720 points. The remaining 280 can be whatever stuff you like the look of and just want to try out. You might want to try a thunderfire cannon, or a jump pack vanguard squad, or a tank or two. Just anything that takes your fancy.

Really? Well critisism was what I wanted, I just figured at first to use vanguards as a big blob of anti-SMEQs and the chaplain would give them a little bit more punch
I'm trying to keep the cost down and aesthetically pleasing, so my query is, could I keep the two veteran squads, not have the meltas in the tactical squads (already have them made) add the rhinos and have something else to balance it out?

well you could use the storm eagle and fit them all into 1 vehical and for the vets just put them in land raiders but 2 squads of 5 man sarget with melee weapon (of your choise) and 2 melta guns and 2 combis (flamer or melta) and put them in 1 land raider

The only problem there is land raiders cost alot of money that I dont have :/ I currently have two tactical squads, getting lascannons for them next and a librian, the sternguards really take my fancy but I'm quite spoilt for choice on anything else really D:

ah then i dont know what to tell you but mabe your can barrow someones stuff or proxy things (uses ba to proxy as daemons)
