so i've been looting a bastion recently, thought I'd post it up on a couple of forums rather than the usual one - here're some pics for you!

yeah, it's a big beasty.

Rivetting is currently in progress, no pictures of that right now though. the pictures don't show it but there's a deathstrike missile in the bastion. I'll try to get some pics of that this weekend.

any comments, critiques and suggestions welcomed!

Utterly ridiculous concept. Sticking a big, clunky tower on top of a big, clunky tank? The idea is... downright Imperial!

As for the execution, it looks good, but that's not exactly a constructive critique. Let's see...

I see a few issues with the assault ramp area. The plating inside could use a bit of work. Some textural detailing wouldn't hurt, visually (possibly intentionally postponed until your eventual riveting spree), but the biggest issue is that stubby spacer capping the open side of the hull. Either finish covering the gap or make it look intentional - right now, it simply looks unfinished.

There's also the issue of the guns mounted above the ramp. They're fine when viewed from the outside, but when the ramp is open, there's just empty space underneath a relatively thin looking bit of roof - it hurts the plausibility of function.

Regarding the overall design, I'd have liked to see slightly more thorough incorporation of the two kits. When I first looked at the model, I wondered why you had parked a converted Baneblade in front of the bastion you advertised in the thread title. There was no instant recognition that the two had been integrated into a single vehicle. I realize that there are limitations when kitbashing something like this, due to the size and shape of the base kits, but the back of the bastion simply sitting on a slab extension feels like a bit of a cop out. A bit more detailing around the joins and a cohesive paintjob will likely be enough to remedy much of this, though.

As I mentioned, I do quite like it, overall. I'm excited to see how it shapes up as you continue working. Be sure to keep us posted!

@ oadie: i see what you mean about the thinness around the assault ramp, I'll try to fix that. to be honest the assault ramp was just to see if I could do it. this whole build has been a sponateous spree, starting last friday, and mostly completed by monday. my original 'brief' to myself was to build a superheavy quickly, without too many major conversions and not too ambitious. at least i made a superheavy
as for integrating the bastion better, I'm not sure what more i can do. the back sticks out, so can't be integrated to anything, and all the faces which can be integrated have been. it might just be the pictures, or simply a difference of opinion. the simple remedy, is pictures with rivets, a grot in a hole and the start of some engine gubbinz on the bastion (which are very WIP):

next up will be to make the rear bumper & engine gubbinz detailed, loot the bastion up more with some armour plates, and adress the thickness & gap issues on the front.

then maybe some more guns

In that case, mission accomplished.

Again, you've surpassed your initially modest goals.

My first thought was positioning. Having never used the two kits, let alone tried to combine them, I have no idea if the bastion could've been moved forward without encroaching on the cannon mounts, mismatching all the slopes, etc. That's why I added the limitations caveat - I honestly have no idea if it could be done "better" (that is, more in line with what I'm imagining, which may not even be possible/practical).

I also had no idea how close to complete you considered this project. Continuing to detail the back will do a lot to alter/hide the "tower on a slab" look I was hesitant about. Further orkifying (spellcheck be damned, that's a word... on Dakka ) both the tank and bastion will also help unify the two, visually. Rivets, weld lines, angle iron, and cross braces would also lend credence to the "in-universe" kitbash, helping the aforementioned incorporation quite a bit.

The model was looking good, overall, so I tried to be thorough in my critique. Seems most of my points would have been addressed, whether I had said anything or not. Too bad - now I can't take any credit when the final product looks downright badass!
