Hey, you might recognize me. The guy who wanted info on Tyranids a while back. Went with it, now I have a pretty good Tyranid 1k point army, but I'm not here to discuss that.

I want to try the flipside- big units that cost a lot, but can totally take punishment like no other! Ogre Kingdoms seem to be just what I'm looking for. I want to construct an army of these. I want to know, is the Battalion any good? Anything to augment them with? I want an army that's good with range, but best at melee. Can survive to get up to melee, then just punishes all around them.

Thoughts? List? Anything?

Ogres can fit your description of what your after very well. Just look at leadbelchers. A unit of them can really dish out some pain and be a good supporting unit in melee when there's nothing else to aerate with scrap. Bulls are a great core choice and you should focus on them for core mostly in my opinion. With a unit of ironguts of decent size in bigger battles with a banner of some kind. I like the movement or flaming attack one personally. Also firebellies and butchers are great depending on the strategy you plan on. I like using firebellies in 1k point games as they can cast rhuin on a nearby leadbelcher unit for more killing power with their cannons. But butchers are also great for keeping units alive and augmenting them.

Also their big monsters look great and perform great. Im a massive fan of the stonehorn. Even if it gets focus fired by artillery its good for keeping other units intact.

Basically I'd say have a go. The battalion box plus cheap deals for bulls on ebay plus a rare/special choice should sort you out for most low points battles. You have many choices with ogres. Enjoy them.

Ogres were my first fantasy army, they're extremelly strong. They're mournfang are the second best in the game only behind demi-gryphons from the empire. Iron guts will ruin anyones day, i would run more of those thand bulls since ogres already have terrible intitative, you may as well give them great weapons, but do bring atleast 1 unit of bulls, preferably with additional hand weapon. Take advantage of thier awesome magic, gave a slaughter master lvl 4 ogre magic, and a lvl 2 butcher beast, tyrants are optional, but if you want it to be fluffy and you want a charecter killer who you know will not die bring him. A bsb is a must tohugh since htey have such low ld. Stonehorns and thundertusks are awesome they will ruin anyone's day with their bufiing and damage in combat. Lead belchers are good but I don't run them, a unit of omurn fang 4 wide with additional hand weapons and full command, with the dragon hide standard is almost impossible to stop, I've flank charged with one of those into a side of black orcs who were grimgor's elite ones who are basicly gods on the battlefield but they were slaughter and 1 only lost 2 wounds then purused and killed the rst of them. Ogres can be run almost any way and still be good. They're 8th ed. book is extremely hlepful and makes them very good for beginners.

The best starting place is definitly a couple Battalions. With the contents, you can build 12 Ogre Bulls(with Ironfists, XHWs are lame) 12 Ironguts, and 6 leadbeltchers. This will basically set you up for Core even up to 3k.

To the 2 battalions you will want to add 2 Ironblasters, 2 boxes of Mournfangs, Firebelly, and a Slaughtermaster. The 2 unassembled Leadbeltchers can be made into a Battle Standard Bearer and a Butcher using the extra bits.

This will easily get you into the 3k range.

Mournfangs and Ogre Bulls should always be assembled with Ironfists.
