I'm in an escalation league at my local GW store. We're up to 1050 and I'm playing IG. In the 800 point games I was running into everyone sticking there troops in a building and getting cover against what ever I was shooting at them with. As it happens I already own a hellhound and was thinking about adding it to my 1050 list. We get a free HQ if it's a new army to us, which IG is in my case, so I have a 600 point command squad. That leaves me with 1050 points of other stuff - mostly whatever I bought over the past year which is a hodgepodge of IG stuff. Anyway, I'm looking at loading up on flamer templates (two chimeras and the hellhound) and some colosus's (converted basilisk chassis). I was interested in hearing anyone's war stories about how they've either used hellhounds in the past or have seen them used against them.

What to do with a hellhound you ask?

Burn heretics

Edit for something remotely useful; everyone I play regularly has marines, so I never really ran a hellhound, always ran the bane wolf (thats the chem one right?) with a multi-melta on the hull. Sped it up a flank (or did I outflank it...I can't remember, can it outflank?) and then tried to gooify marines until it died.

You burn stuff with it. Then you can roast marshmellows over their corpse and feed it to the oygrns. Oygrns love roasted marshmellows.

What? WHAT!?

Anyways, hellhounds are okay, but I'd only bother with one if I knew that I'd be having chronic problems with lots of low-save models in cover. Otherwise, the colossus is a much better buy, most of the time (assuming you have the HS slots, of course). The other thing that your opponent can't take cover saves against is attacks made in close combat. There are a few nasty CC surprises that a guard list can throw down if you're interested in that.

Also, one of the ways that you can beat your opponent passing too many cover saves is to just make them take more cover saves. A pair of hydras will put a lot of shots downrange, and, while they won't be AS good as a hellhound, they are also actually useful against things that AREN'T light infantry huddling in cover, unlike the hellhound.

Bane Wolf. If you're playing a hellhound run it as a bane wolf. Kills marines just as well as any other army...

Also has to be really, really close to do it...Marines don't like close vehicles at all.
Hellhound with its superior range is alright against MEQ, you can force 4-5 armour saves a turn and your opponent won't regard it as a terribly big threat given its AP 4.
Also consider plonking a multi-melta on it so it can blast armour in a pinch.

Ok, not to get into the list too much (since that's another forum all together) but just for reference this is what I'm considering doing. I was thinking about taking one of the colossus' and convert it to bane wolf (yeah, it looks like the better deal). I was going to let all of my men cower in cover and fire from there and send in the chimeras as fast as possible to try and flame as many dudes with a 5+ armor save. The last game I played it seemed like 4+ cover saves were the bane of my existence when it came to killing the enemy. I took out all of their armor but killing troops became problematic. I still have 5 lascannons in this list for long distance high AV targets and plenty of melta (at this point level anyway) to deal with anything that might get close.

@Ailaros - yep 600 points! I'm sure it's a marketing ploy by GW to try and convince people to buy a new army. So we're seeing some pretty crazy stuff with HQs. I played against a Tau army who had a 500 point commander HQ with all of the bells and whistles.

P.S. I know it says 1400 below but that's because of the 600 point HQ I have that doesn't count against my 800 point army.

1400 Pts - Imperial Guard Roster

Total Roster Cost: 1400

HQ: Company Command Squad (10#, 600 pts)

Crazy, didn't think there were enough options to get them over 250 let alone 500. Must be using Creed, Kell, Nork and a Chimera?

Plus all 3 regimental advisers. You can't have Creed and Kell. Most expensive CCS is Kell+Creed+Medi Pack+vox+Heavy Flamer+Lascannon+Plasma Gun+Krak Grenades, Carapace Armour, Camo Cloaks, +Astropath + MOTF + MOO + Nork. I make that out to be 530 points. Chimera with all upgrades is 120 so that's 650.
Anyway yeah that's an incredible stupid unit. T3 4+ armour save. 4 would die in an explosion result alone...

True - no one would spend that much intentionally. Why can't you run creed and kell in the same unit?

you can. he's being silly.

and the hellhound is better than the banewolf here. Marines are well known for their ability to spam missile launchers, multimeltas, and twin-linked lascannons. A weapon with such high level of threat as a banewolf that has a weapon with a 0" range probably isn't going to survive to get a solid shot off.

At least the hellhound will be able to fire at least once before it dies...

The Banewolf is super-specialized for MEQ killing. But the short range makes it really hard to use well. I think the Hellhound's range (and the ability to angle the template in whatever direction you want) will be more useful here.
