Well recently I have been trying to find myself a new army to play as.
I had a tyranid swarm force for...10 years on and off, and while i still like my lil monsters, it gets tedious having to carry a carry-case and a shoebox of models, even to play a 1500 point game lol. (dont even get me started on the painting... shudder)

So for a break, I decided to start a new amry, something a bit more elite-y. And going against all my previous apprehensions, I thought maybe id finally collect a space marine army. Even though they are so common, I thought, Id find a chapter I like the look of.

And so I found Grey Knights. Henchmen (especially crusaders and jokaero), and the dread knights, made it look like it might be quite an interesting list to play.

However since I bought a couple box sets, Ive learned a lot more about the army, and the rather hated "draigowing" stuff. And theres so much hate and animosity towards anyone who plays grey knights cos of them apparently being "OP", that im having second thoughts. I dont want to go to a game day with my Knights, just to have everyone go "oh no another grey knight force, power gamer, theyre so OP lets trounce him", which would frankly annoy me..

And so now im reconsidering. So far all I have purchased is:
12 warhammer fantasy Warriors of Chaos (to be Crusaders)
box of 5 grey knight terminators
10 standard grey knights
a single Dreadknight (my list called for 2, but I already have a wraithlord model so I was gonna proxy that in for a while..)

So as theyre mostly just standard units, apart from the decorations, I was considering changing chapters. Maybe go onto chaos instead, as I believe they have a codex update coming in the next year or so. I hear Thousand Sons are an interesting bunch to play as.

Basically just wanted some feedback, maybe some ideas. Someone to say that I wont be villified for choosing Grey Knights lol. Who knows. Just looking for a way to make good use of the money ive spent! Im sure no-one would mind if I used a properly-modified dreadknight as a demon prince or something lol

If you like em' , play em'. If you really like the looks of them, that's even better. If you are concerned about it, then don't build a cheese list. There are a lot of fun units that you can use that are not ultra competitive.

Also keep in mind that 6th is probably coming out soon with CSM and DA also "maybe" right around the corner. Everything changes in this game. Perhaps not super fast, but it does change. With a new edition on the horizon, there are probably huge changes in the works.

The only thing that remains constant is how cool you think your toys are. So, I say, "If you like em', play em'."

Ahh well, looks-wise Im not too badly off, cos I was going to modify most of my grey knights units into shield-carriers anyway as a mini-project. Even the Dreadknight, cos I thought it might look a bit more like my own then lol. Modifying them all into chaos is easy, as in theory I dont even need to change anything. Except maybe the paint scheme.
The problem with GK is that it seems to be difficult to make a non-cheesy army list thats also competitive, and if its not going to put up a decent fight then it spoils the fun for everyone! The henchman list was the most varied, but after posting it for review I was basically told it would only be worthwhile if I shrunk each unit and put them in rhinos and razorbacks... and if I wanted to field an IG style army id just collect IG lol.

I guess I'm just second guessing cos, lets face it, these models are all hugely overpriced, and I wanted to try and get the most "fun" for my pound lol. Im already in the habit of using finding various proxies in armies, so that I have some choices in what I can use. Having a wraithlord and a dreadknight, for example, does handily mean I essentially have 2 wriaths and 2 dreads lol.

Now that I'm thinking about it, it would be fun to make a demonic dreadknight. Im sure chaos has a few monstrous creatures in its ranks, even flying ones. and if they dont, they will have in their new codex

Oh the grey knight list I would *like* to make, would have no dreadnoughts in it at all. Or tanks, if I could help it. I dont like any of the tank models, theyre just far too boring, and while dreadnoughts are alright I much prefer the new dreadknight models. More potential for modifications, etc.
Unfortunatly at the moment, it seems impossible to field a decent army without about 6 rhinos or razorbacks. Almost like every space marine player, deep down inside, wishes he was in the imperial guard lol.

edit:
Oh yeh, I also liked crusaders and jokaeros, crusaders cos they are a nice shield unit I can model, and jokaero cos I'm a Pratchett fan lol.... although that did just make me realise I can use a Jokaero model as a Librarian for my army! Hmmmm....

I would assume that no-one would have a problem with me fielding a dreadknight model as any monstrous creature/appropriately sized unit.

With properly magnetised weapon choices of course.

It's interesting to me that you and I are in almost exactly the same boat. I've played 'nids on and off for years and also recently made the switch to GK. (Maybe not a "switch," as I will always love my bugs.)

I also had many of the same concerns in building my new army, especially wanting to differentiate them from other SM lists and a personal anti-spam policy.

There are three things you must never do: Never turn down free booze. Never turn down free food. And never turn down free booze.

~5,500 points ~2,500 points next?

I don't get this. Why are people so concerned about what whiny insecure gamers are going to say about their list? They're the ones with the issue. Don't let their baggage ruin your game.

Its like a football coach getting mad at the opposing coach for always running the plays that score touchdowns, while he only runs "real" football plays that are more fun. Its a game with scores, points, and objectives... winning is kinda what your supposed to try to do. And now we're at the point where people are worried about the perception that they are playing to win. If people want to run a list that has a good chance of losing, they can't get upset when that is exactly what happens.

Your money, your time, play what you want. Heck, I'm tempted to build a Psi-Dread list just to shove it people's faces every time I read about people giving gamers grief for buying and building any given list (only tempted though). Nor, might I add, am I particularly worried about any of my forces handling a Psi-Dread or Leafblower or Draigo/Loganwing or DropWolf list. If I'm not ready for lists like that, its my own dumb fault.

Maybe we're just blessed with level headed club heads who refuse to stand for this crap around me. There is no legal list you could bring to any of the three FLGS and two out-of-store clubs I play at, that if someone gave you grief over a cheese list it would be them, not you, that locals would come down on (and hard might I add).

Almost none of us play pure optimized lists, but those who choose to can. If you play for fun, play for fun. If you play to win, play to win. If people have a problem with you following the rules and beating the snot out of them, tell them to go play CalvinBall instead.

See now in theory I totally agree with Lobukia, and in practise I'm mostly only going to be playing friendly games anyway, so I could use giant matchboxes as tanks if I really wanted to lol

I think im gonna read through the chaos codex and see if anything grabs me. But either way, I will model up my GK terminators and dreadknight.

even if I change to chaos later, I'm pretty sure I can convert the models into something appropriately chaos-ey, without anyone but the most beardy complaining about it. Hell, I've seen an all-Ork necron army before now, so i guess I shouldnt worry.

i could not agree more. transporting, painting and cost is enough reason not to buy a horde army.

The Orks have always been a temptation, but its still very hordey, and the current codex is going to be out of date for a long time from the looks of things. Some of those units are just so darned amusing though lol. They do have the advantage that very few people seem to play as them though, so they have a degree of uniqueness to them.

About to browse the chaos codex, see if theres any fun and interesting things I can play with and convert. Defilers seem interesting.

Hmm well, some of the chaos stuff seems to be pretty fun. I shall have to look further.

Transporting a horde army? Solved.
Painting a horde army? Solved.
Buying a horde army? Solved. Solved again for good measure.

Horde armies aren't bad at all. There's always a cheap way to buy them, a time saving method to paint them, and someone offering a monster case to transport them.

KR Multicase also make excellent cases, and they are more affordable than Battlefoam. Also, for an army like Tyranids, you can look into dipping to save on paint time. Army Painter makes a variety of mini waxes or something of the sort that you can just dip your models into and it basically shades them for you. That and either their colored primers or an airbrush can save a LOT of time when painting, and you can do large batches at once.
