Ok so im trying to paint a space marine apothecary that i have lying around, I have based him in codex grey, then i have painted fortress grey over that and now im trying to do the final coat of skull white!!!

However guess what it keeps going all splotchy (what a great word) i have tried all different methods of applying the white, i have watered down my white and tried all consistencys of paint, tried adding flow aid to the mix to reduce my brush strokes, but no matter what i cant seem to get a uniform colour!!

i really want this model to look the dogs gonads but this white is letting me down, i know it is a fickle colour to work with but any tips would be great.

thanks in advance

try using the light grey mixed in with white, that will make it much thicker and easier to apply, then highlight it with pure skull white. This always work for me, and looks better than just pure skull white as it looks quite unrealistic.

Or you could cover up all the recesses and detail with bluetack then spay it with white primer, a buddy of mine did that once and it worked really well

Ceramite White is very good, I tried it out at my local store the other day. I'd thin it a little, and do a couple of coats, but in comparison to using Skull White, it's amazing.

Remember that you don't actually want the whole surface to be pure white, just the highlights. If using an extreme (edge) highlighting method, then you'll be needing to go to a lighter grey, but it should still be off-white.

Lots of times white can be tough for folks because it's at the end of the spectrum which means you can really only shade it.
That being said, there are lots of ways to "skin this cat" as it were.

1. Start with a white primed model and add shading as needed . This is perhaps the easiest way for a model that is the majority white.

2. If your model is predominantly dark in color with an area or two that is white, the trick then becomes layering up to white in the needed spots.
A light undercoat is essential to minimize the number of passes with white you'll need to make.

You can use a cool or warm color under your white, but most folks go with some form of a grey since it is cool and any portions left as "shadow" will read as such. Using a warm color (bone) may have the effect of making the object look like bone or marble even.

And there are a few things you can do to get the most from your painting regardless of what color you're using.

Hope this helps some.

I tell them its "The ten-zero factor, coolness ten, combat effectiveness... zero."

Yeah, Ceramite White should solve your problems. Skull White isn't great at covering much, its more a highlight.

In all my experience painting white I've only been ably to get a "true" white color by using oil based paints. Don't know if you're familiar with Testors model paint but they make the best in the business. I swear by Citadel water based paints, but use a oil based model paint for white. You can even paint it over a Citadel base coat. Just make sure you pick up a little jar of thinner to use also.

"Oh yeah ... You and what army?" ... "Me and my Zoats $#!&*! that's who!"
