So I'm making Red Hunters, but I think I'm going to use the Blood Angels book as it seems to be superior to the vanilla marines book. I've never played a game of 40k before so I don't know what works and what doesn't.

I know I want a librarian and at least 5 sternguard. I'd also prefer to have at least 1 predator with an Autocannon as I love the look of it.

So can anyone help me design a 1k list and if you have time a 2k list(2k seems to be the average sized game locally).

Do you want the autocannon predator and the sternguard both in the 1k list and the 2k list? Or would it be okay if they were only both in the 2k list, and only one of them was in the 1k list?

I'd like both in the 1k if possible as well as the 2k list.

Why don't you first write down a list (or a rough outline of one), then come back and post it for critique. Take the time to look through the codex and figure out what you would want to take.

Here is what I was thinking so far:

Librarian, Bolter, Blood Lance, Shield of Sang. 100
5 Sternguard, Combi-meltas, Razorback 205
5 Terminator Assault Squad, Thunder Hammers and Storm Shields 225
5 Assault Marines 100
10 Tactical Marines, Flamer, Missile Launcher, Razorback 225
Predator 70
Land Speeder, Heavy Flamer, Multi-Melta 70

Army total 995

Pretend the tactical squad doesn't exist as a troops choice for BA. They're that horrible for us.

Try something like these Mech lists - that seemed to be what you were going for?

1k list:
Spoiler:
HQ:
Librarian (Shield of Sanguinius, Smite)
(100 points)

Elites:
4x Sternguard Veterans (4x Combi-meltas)
- Sternguard Veteran Sergeant (Bolter)
- Razorback (Lascannon, TL Plasmagun)
(235 points)

Troops:
4x Assault Marines (BP/CCW)
- Assault Sergeant (BP/CCW)
- Razorback (Lascannon, TL Plasmagun)
(155 points)

4x Assault Marines (BP/CCW)
- Assault Sergeant (BP/CCW)
- Razorback (Lascannon, TL Plasmagun)
(155 points)

4x Scout Marines (Sniper Rifles)
- Scout Sergeant (Sniper Rifle)
(75 points)

Heavy Support:
Predator (Autocannon, Lascannon Sponsons)
(135 points)

Vindicator (Demolisher Cannon, Storm Bolter)
(145 points)

1000/1000 points

Librarian rides with the Sternguard in the Razorback and pops out to "shoot" with Smite. It was either Smite or Blood Lance, and I figured that'd be kind of overkill what with 4 combi-meltas in the squad. Fire 2 of them per turn, unless there's an HQ that has to die NOW, in which case, fire off all 4 meltas at it (if it's Eternal Warrior - otherwise, just fire 2).

Scout squad babysits the homefield objective, rest of the army shoots the gak out of things.

Now for the 2k points list, building off this one:

Spoiler:
HQ:
Librarian (Storm Bolter, Smite, Shield of Sanguinius)
(103 points)

Elites:
4x Sternguard Veterans (4x Combi-meltas)
- Sternguard Sergeant (Combi-melta, Meltabombs)
- Razorback (Lascannon, TL Plasmagun)
(245 points)

Fast Attack:
Baal Predator (TL Assault Cannon, no sponsons, Searchlight)
(116 points)

Baal Predator (TL Assault Cannon, no sponsons, Searchlight)
(116 points)

Baal Predator (TL Assault Cannon, no sponsons, Searchlight)
(116 points)

Troops:
4x Assault Marines (BP/CCW)
- Assault Sergeant (BP/CCW)
- Razorback (Lascannon, TL Plasmagun)
(155 points)

4x Assault Marines (BP/CCW)
- Assault Sergeant (BP/CCW)
- Razorback (Lascannon, TL Plasmagun)
(155 points)

4x Assault Marines (BP/CCW)
- Assault Sergeant (BP/CCW)
- Razorback (Lascannon, TL Plasmagun)
(155 points)

4x Assault Marines (BP/CCW)
- Assault Sergeant (BP/CCW)
- Razorback (Lascannon, TL Plasmagun)
(155 points)

4x Assault Marines (BP/CCW)
- Assault Sergeant (BP/CCW)
- Razorback (Lascannon, TL Plasmagun)
(155 points)

4x Scout Marines (3x Sniper Rifles, 1x Missile Launcher, Camo Cloaks)
- Scout Sergeant (Sniper Rifle, Camo Cloak)
(100 points)

Heavy Support:
Predator (Autocannon, Lascannon Sponsons, Searchlight)
(136 points)

Vindicator (Demolisher Cannon, Storm Bolter, Searchlight)
(146 points)

Vindicator (Demolisher Cannon, Storm Bolter, Searchlight)
(146 points)

1999/2000 points

The Librarian got a storm bolter just in case there's an Eldar or 'nid player on the board to force psychic tests on 3d6. That's brutal even for Mephiston, let alone ye olde 2 wounde Librarian. Still, rides with the Sternguard and occasionally gets out of the metal box to "shoot" things (or Smite, actually). You might want a second librarian for more Shield of Sanguinius coverage - in that case, the libby is the same exact cost as the scout squad, so they can be dropped in/dropped out. Just figured that since it sounds like you're building this army, you'd much rather have the same units in each list, wherever possible.

The scout squad babysits the home field objective while the rest of the list shoots the gak out of things, only with roughly twice the shootiness as before.

Does this help some? I know it's not quite as varied as the guideline list you posted, but lists that combine mech with infantry might look good on paper, but actually perform rather poorly.

Edit: added spoiler tags to break up the monster Wall 'o Text.

Question: how does one go about getting the razorback weapons you listed. GW and FW don't offer them as far as I can tell.

You know, that's a good question. I just checked and can't find them anywhere either - you might want to check eBay, or just convert them. Next time I go to my FLGS, I'll ask our resident model-keeper if he has any, and where he found them if he does.

Until then, just run counts-as?
