So they both carry a Bolt Pistol, Boltgun, and CCW. I'm not into gluing weapons onto backpacks. I used to arm my CSM with a CCW in one hand and a full sized Bolter in the other (the pistol is hidden away some place).

I already have a bunch of grey hunters carrying only Boltguns. While It's feasible that they could be carrying the pistol and a small CCW in pouches or their backpacks, what if the model only has a Bolt Pistol and CCW?

What does everyone think about this issue? Can we all just assume they have all three despite the model, since they come like that standard (in the Codex)? Will people actually pull me up on this and say "those three guys don't have Bolters, so can't fire at 18 inches"?

WYSIWYG by definition of GW under my interpretation is that you have to show Upgrades clearly not standard equipment.

GW: "Models need to have appropriate bitz to represent the weapons, armour, and equipment available to the model, whether they are characters or not. This is to ensure that all models are easily recognizable by both the owner and the opponent. For pieces of equipment and weapons that automatically come with the model and cannot be exchanged for other pieces, they are not required to be shown on the model. Upgrades that would not be visible are not required to be modelled, but if the whole unit does not have the upgrade, the model/s with the upgrade should be easily recognizable from the rest of the unit. Upgrades that do not have bitz made for them should be modelled in a way that makes them readily clear as to the function of the weapon, equipment or armor."

Thanks! Now I'm free to mix it up. Where did you find this?

WYSIWYG is defined on p 47. What tboneswoodhouse posted appears to come from here and is not an official GW statement. Although it is the way everybody plays it as far as I know.

Technically you are breaking WYSIWYG.
But it's a stupid rule anyway, no one much cares for it.

Unnessesarily extravegant word of the week award goes to jcress410 for this:

Actually, WYSIWYG for upgrades isn't stupid at all.
100% WYSIWYG can be stupid, but only because some models have insane amounts of wargear.

WYSIWYG has never been so much about the rules as it is a gaming convention intended to make the game easier to follow. How closely you adhere to it is entirely up to you, barring event-specific rules.

For the Bolter/Bolt Pistol/Chainsword mix, most players won't care if you don't have all three represented, although a reminder before the game is probably a good idea.

For my own piece of mind, my Grey Hunters have bolter and CCW in hand, and pistol holstered.

Well if I follow the idea that wargear that cannot be exchanged doesn't have to be represented, then I have to show everything but the Frag and Krak grenades.

I'm inclined to go for only showing upgrades, not standard equipment. It's frees up my modelling options.

Thanks for the replies!

It has been a long time since I looked at the 3rd ed rulebook but I thought you had to have equipment modelled on the model, bar in daemonhunters cos they suspended it since an inquisitor has his retinue to carry it all.

I agree wysiwyg is now a convention that does make it easier to see what is on the board and where possible you should do it. I modelled all my GH with bolter and chainsword but I don't have anywhere near enough pistols(either bolt pisotls or that tiny holster you get with the tacticle squads) to put them on the squad.
I doubt anyone would eve call you on it at a tournament, if they do then point at any space marine you can see and remark that that doesn't have two seperate types of grenade clearly modelled.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.
