GAME 1: Fernando Cespedes (who finished 18th overall, with 81 battle points)

it was definitely 302 pts but what i remember of it adds up to 282. maybe had furious charge and something.

that adds up to only 1377 so far so i can't remember what else he had.
basically it was siren with lascannon shooty doom. what a nice start to the weekend.

Mission was Omega, Take and Hold. table had a reasonable amount of terrain on, but the middle was significantly empty. i had a huge 12" circluar wood just in front of my dzone on the right (kroot!)

deployment, is his lasplas forming a gun line along the front of his dzone, and oblits hiding behind a wood. my kroot all go in the wood, all within 24" of him, and all between 7-12" deep in the wood, haw haw.

the game was extremely straightforward.
he rolls siren, runs forward. i cant shoot it, i kill a few of the tactical guys. i snipe a lascannon from one unit, i snipe las,plas, and a bolter caddy from another unit, and the remaining 2 go and run behind the wood to protect their 50 pts

i get my reserves on, i cant kill the predators. he doesn't mis-roll for siren each turn so i cant shoot it at any point. he damages my guys but nothing significant.

i misjudge my stealth jump back, i'm within 23" of the siren and he gets the required 5 to fleet into combat, and butchers some stealths.

(oddly, he's got 2 re-rolls off master crafting and spiky bits, and 6 attacks... although you can't master craft ur daemon weapon, you can MC the normal ccw.
i guess he doesnt need to swing with the dreadaxe as stealths dont have invuls and he denies armour saves anyway cos he's monsterous creature, so that also means he doesn't need a daemonic mastery test.)

he consolidates into my dzone rather than into nearby kroot, i guess it doesnt matter as i cant shoot it anyway. crap. oh well there's no shame in losing 20 pts to a siren gay army like this.

my turn, i move my kroot units out of the woods and encircle him, i know the judges have been briefed that siren is shooting OR assault, not both. i ponder charging, mainly to annoy him... i think encircling him is a better idea as it ties him up for a turn as all he'd be able to do is charge the kroot.

i make feeble and token efforts at moving the rest of my stuff away from the siren, (which means into the lascannon LOS)

i realise in my assault phase that i've f**ked it up a little bit, if i encircle with the kroot and sit there he can kill that first squad and then consolidate into the next squad, butcher that in my assault phase, and consolidate again and be closer to me. it probably wont make much difference anyway. i decide to charge with all the kroot (9+6 of them remaining)
its probably a silly move, and i'd have been better sitting in a circle around him but never mind.


he takes combat drugs, '1 extra attack' and 'ignore first failed armour save'. oh crap.
he activates a power (fueled by pain) which means every PASSED armour save he makes, gives him an extra attack after all other attacks.

oh crap.

his combat drug roll comes up a double though (lol) so he loses a wound (lol) which gives me 151 vps automatically (lol)

his 5 attacks kills 4 kroot
my 11 remaining kroot get 33 attacks, i hit on 5's and wound on 5's, and force 4 armour saves. he fails them ALL. one, two, two, two.
we both stare at the dice for a very long time. he ignores the first failed save. thats 3 more wounds, he already lost one, and he has only got 3 to start with. we stare at the dice some more. incredible. he's dead. kroot consolidate back into the woods.

OMFG 15 KROOT KILLED THE SIREN PRINCE

rest of the game is played in somewhat of a daze/shock, for the next couple turns my rails still cant hurt the preds and my crisis cant hurt the defiler, his shooting all misses pretty much, by turn 6 i push 6 stealths and a rail-less hammerhead onto the objective, he pushes the remaining oblits forward as well, and plasma's 4 of the stealths, so he scores 210 and i score 180 for the mission.

i killed 3 marines and the prince (well, i killed more marines and a oblit but didnt get pts for it)
he killed 4+4 stealths, half a kroot unit, half the 6 man stealths, and the devilfish


so my score is 302+50 = 352, + 180 = 532
his score is 120+120+35+95+90 = 460, + 210 = 670

difference of 138 = DRAW

i really didnt deserve nor expect any points from that game. wow.

he was 3rd at our heat, with 9 speeders and no librarian. i guess all the seer councils make librarian a good idea, assault cannon is waste of time against 4+++

Omega Recon.

don't remember too much of the game, i started with my kroot in his left corner in trees, the DC and libby came on that side and chased them off.
libby charged kroot again to wipe them out, which meant he was right in front of my railgun that came on that side. BOOM dead librarian.

rest of the game was mostly just me losing to speeders, and him powerfisting hammerheads out of the sky.

annoyingly, i had a rail-less hammerhead running away from the DC who were in my dzone, i'd got charged by them, lost my railgun, he'd stayed around to finish the other hammerhead, then in the turn after he got the required 5" blood rage roll to re-charge it and kill it, scoring 180 pts, and denying me scoring with it for another 180 pts

he scored with 1 speeder (160 pts for the squad)
i scored with 6 stealths that hid in his far left corner doing nothing

he killed everything of mine apart from those steaths and a wound off a shas'el

i killed librarian, one baal, scouts, half a tac squad.

so he earnt 1271 + 160 = 1431
i earnt 491 + 180 = 671

difference of 760 = 17-3 to him.
a really great game, but annoying result 10 pts away from a 13-7 result. also that blood rage charge on the DC made a 360 pt difference, crap.

a freaking rediculous amount of firepower, but its not as hard to take out as normal IW armies. i remember looking at the list, thinking we must be both on 13 battle points of 40 so far, and thinking "oh ok, its 6 oblits and 2 indirect ordnance, maybe theres some easy points here then"

lol. thats a horrible army for tau normally, but this weekend just was not a normal situation. its somewhat extreme when you look at that army and think "oh look some easy points"

Omega Recon

he deploys his 4x5 guys in a gunline and oblits deepstrike. i infilgay a squad of kroot in the far left corner, over a hill from the missile havocs so i'm within 18" so could potentially charge him. i've got no other deployments down though and kroot are in the open so they'll just get gunned down. but it might work..

the kroot run at the havocs and get gunned down.
our reserves come on. i dance around, his flight prince hides, we trade shots and i grind him down without losing much, JSJ and hiding the tanks, and kroot shooting through 7" of wood denies him most of his shots. his indirect keeps scattering and oblits arent hurting the tanks

his flight prince moves around a wood slightly forward, i bring on a railhead and rail it diagonally across the table from the far left corner. he passes his invul save though, damnit

flight prince moves to the middle of the table into a ruin, i get a shot on it from the right, and miss, damnit
next turn he moved into the middle of the ruin, i take a rail shot again from the left and its 6.1" too far into the ruin and i can't see it, damnit.
i dump stealth fire into it and take 2 wounds off though, but its still alive damn.
in the last turn i had the option to rail it again, but it'd have meant not pushing my hammerhead into the score zone.. i chose correctly but i wish i'd been able to kill the thing.

on the right flank, i sneaked firewarriors in devilfish and a hammerhead into his score zone, behind the dead basilisk, and killed the havoc missile squad down to 1 guy

bikes, i killed one with SMS, then he weaved them through buildings to try and charge central stealths, but i rapid fired with kroot and killed the last 2

on the left flank, i had 4+4 stealths and a hammerhead, i wanted to get the stealths up the flank past 2 oblits, who were about 15" from the flank. risky, if i dont kill the oblits, they'll melt a squad of stealths. i just managed to kill them 2 though and got the stealths in to score. they could then JSJ from the left corner into his firebase, and claimed the missile havocs


end of game, i killed 2 squads of oblits, bikes, 1 las/plas squad, missile havocs, half pts for the lord, half pts for the h.bolter havoc, and the basilisk (which didn't have indirect fire upgrade, damnit. i dont think he actually used it indirectly though, as it got stunned then died)

so i killed 920,


i scored 4+4 stealths, firewarriors, and a hammerhead = 530, my total = 1450

i only lost 10 kroot and he got no scoring, so there should have been a VP difference of 1380 = massacre

but cos i / we added up his kills wrong, i think we forgot the bikes and a tac squad, as they were wiped off the board... we came out with a total killed of his as 696, so a vp difference of 1156

17 - 3 to me.

gnnnn! only just noticed this now, as at the time i probably just wanted to go to the bar.

i finish day 1 on 30 pts of 60

he hides 10 termies and dread behind a central wood, he puts chaplain and unit in the land raider and dreadnaught behind it, on the left behind a wood

first turn, i railgun the landraider dead.
rest of the game shows him stunning a hammerhead, once. i also lost 49 pts cos a shas'el lost a wound jumping into woods to shoot a dread.
i suffered no other damage.

railguns are on FIRE, they fired 16 times this game, and missed twice. he has 18 models, i killed about 10 of them with rails. he only passed about 1-2 invul saves.


i wipe him out to the model, 2710 to me, 49 to him, massacre.

felt a bit sorry for him, taking this kind of an army to this kind of a tournament, but he took it all with very good humour and it was a pleasant game

this game sucked. the guy was fine, its just i played badly. i got shut down in my quarter, couldn't kill anything, while he advanced over most of the board. only me having the final turn, and being able to dash hammerhead into contest the left quarter, and stealths to contest the right quarter, saved me from getting my *donkey*handed to me

i got drawn against a space wolf player with 4 rhinos (lol) but on the table next to us there's 2 players who've played each other before, so we got swapped. the 3rd one was apocathery marines, but i got this guy instead.

the table we're on has got 3 HUGE woods on in the middle (woo)

Gamma Seek and Destroy

i go for flanks, hard. left flank has 2 hammerheads, 6 stealths, kroot, shas'el
right flank has hammerhead, mech FW, shas'el
middle has kroot, and 4+4 stealths

he deepstrikes his 3*5 termies, but the librarian starts on the board in the middle of his dzone, hanging out next to the tac squads gunline

turn 1, i push hammerhead forward to SMS the speeder, its the only threat to my kroot so i want to kill it so it cant flame my kroot. i fail, he multimelts me dead. i then kill it in the next turn.

he Furys a stealth from the middle squad, i jump all my squads into woods in turns 2 and 3 to protect against teleporting termies appearing, and i lose another from the middle squad, then he furys again and i lose the last one and he runs off. balls.

my left flank wipes out his static tacs and my kroot kill the scouts

then his termies start to drop, early on he gets the cyclone squad and drops it in my dzone, they do very little damage, i run the kroot up to them and jump a shas'el on the right towards them, the shas'el only has the cover of the dead HH to protect him so after killing 1 with him, i decide to charge with the kroot, he switches off his pfists so he can strike first, but his 8 attacks do nothing, i kill 1, he holds. next round i kill 2, he holds. next round, i kill the last guy, lol.

then the other 2 squads of asscans drop, and one of them kills a hammerhead on the left flank, the other squad takes the railgun off the other one on flank.

balls. the rest of his army is mostly dead, but i can't get rid of these 10 termies, i've got shas'el and 6 stealths and 10 kroot there but he keeps passing his saves and i dont take either squad below half.

at the end ive got 1 hammerhead alive, 6 man stealths below half, 4 man stealths above half, both shas'els alive, FW alive, DF dead, both kroot alive

he's got 2 termy, 1 tac squad, and librarian alive


approx 1390 to me, 1255 to him, DRAW



i finish overall with 67 battle points from 120, i got 11/20 on the quiz, and got 25/27 for painting etc.
this puts me on 65th place, (joint 62nd) with 136 total pts.

in every single game, i'd have been better off with plasma/missiles than burstcannon in my elite slots.

i knew torgoch's list would be better than mine for the final's metagame, but i didnt appreciate how much so.

(he's dropped the devilfish, a unit of kroot, for d-pods on the tanks, and 2 bodyguard on one shas'el, and 2 more stealths- these changes are good for the kind of homo armies i faced, but not that special normally.)

i'm thinking of going fully-crisis in the new codex, but before that's out, there's still 2 more tournaments, carnage and yorkshire final.
carnage i'm not really arsed about, i think it wont be as hardcore so stealths will be better.

yorky will be more hardcore i think.

i'm thinking of dropping the firewarriors shas'ui, (10) and 4 stealths (120) and getting 2 fireknives in an elite slot (130)

alternatively i could drop the kroot and the shas'ui, and get 2 bodyguard (75*2), but the kroot have truely earnt their place in my army this weekend.



the optimal answer, i think really, torgochs approach of dropping the devilfish, (95) and some of the firewarriors and getting 2 bodyguard suits, while keeping all the elite slots for stealths.

this drops the fish which is useful but non-scoring, and it makes one of the HQ slots a scoring unit. hmmm.

The Crisis really performed for me in the final. The sheer quanitities of firepower running round meant that i simply didn't dare expose my Stealth Suits in most games, and I'm thinking about going to down to a single unit for next season's heat and running masses of Crisis that will JSJ over terrain and hope not to meet too much indirect fire.

For the final, however, i have a cunning plan

yea, way more of the armies there than i was expecting are just asscans, starcannons, and oblits, which stealths can't engage safely, and aren't that effective against. my units where hiding a lot, or had to take quite big risks i wasnt happy with..


in new codex, crisis get cheaper and shield drones are fixed. i think im gonna just run 'crisis army' of 10 shielded suits, min troops, 2 fusion piranhas and 3 railheads. it would be with shielded broadsides, but the submunition and skimmer hulls are the only protection against fast skimmer armies when you dont have the volume of shots anymore, so will still need railheads.

 

 

i'm quite interested to know how you found the crisis teams worked, what was the threats to them, how/when did they die, etc?

Interestingly, when I played Giorgio (your game 3), he had a predator, rather than that defiler...

Unless there were two Giorgios with remarkably similar (but not identical) IW armies kicking around that day...

The Crisis Suits didn't die as far as i can remember. The only things I lost over the whole weekend were a unit of Stealth Suits (one died in three games to shooting) and the Hammerheads, which died everyone time someone looked at them. Then again, the Crisis didn't score very much either, other than in one take and hold.

he definitely had 2x havocs, defiler, basilisk when i played him. i'm certain of it. there wasnt any other giorgios, and on the roster he's down as imperial guard

he had 2 oblit models, and another squad was made from termies with loads of guns on their arms. and his missile havocs were all converted from bits and pieces of random missile things like dreads arms and stuff

Yup, yup, definitely the same guy, and he definitely had the predator rather than the defiler when I played him. Funnily enough, the defiler would probably have done him more good in the game against me

loller skates. that was a highlight of the weekend actually, all leathered in bugmans late at night, "what? you got trashed by static marines? how the hell did that happen? explain to me how you lose to static marines, because i've forgotten how"
hahaha a bit heavy handed sarcasm there, was a good night in the pub. incidentally our quiz team was called "pete foley is gay for dwarves" because of the rediculous questions he'd set.. apparently he just googled for "gay pub quiz questions", copy, paste

I read it over at TWF. It's always hard to tell if that sort of thing is true, overblown, or just sour grapes because outsiders did so well.

I'm not sure 100%. Something definately happened at the WFB GT Final, though. The judges at the 40K event were following a new more interventionist code of practice,which came on the back of the events at the WFB final incidents.

Eerr, it weren't me, i got someone in to play the game for me... urr... damn landspeeders. 6 crisis suits at 'em and they just wouldn't die. And 2 glancing hits of HHs, both of which were 6s didn't help. But, nah, my fault just played the game badly, deserved it.

I think i might have had the the crisis team down to 1 wound in that game. There was a plasma cannon  dropping 1 wound on them per turn, from a wood after i killed the rest of his squad, and he simply refused to die. Stealth Team spent 2 turns trying to kill him and he passed 2 volleys of Crisis fire too

8 Minor Psyker Powers only gives you 95% chance to get Siren, i wouldnt call that imba, for sure.
With T5, the DP is usually wounded at 5+ in CC, but if you exchange D. Strength with D. Resilience, now it is
wounded at 6+ and still have Combat Drugs to get to S6. (No chance for S8 with Furious Charge, though)

Love the part where the Kroot kill the siren prince.

Remember folks, guns don't kill people. Drugs don't kill people. Kroot kill people with guns who do drugs! Don't do drugs or Kroot will eat you!
