I'v decided that i want to start a Necron army, to start i was planning on buying a battle-force, another ghost ark as ill be having the one from the battle-force as a doomsday ark and then a command barge.
Any advice on this would be great

it's possible to make a decent/playable 1000 point army using only 1x Battleforce and 2x Barges (though, it will require some crafty conversions, sticking some Deathmark heads on a few Warrior bodies that have had their guns replaced with staves of some kind).

Overlord (Scythe, MS Scarabs) = 115
+Command Barge (Gauss cannon) = 80
3 Harbingers of Destruction (1x Solar Pulse) = 135
"Lord" (Scythe) = 45

5 Warriors = 65
5 Warriors = 65
5 Warriors = 65
5 Immortals (tesla) = 85

5 Scarabs = 75

Annihilation Barge = 90
Doomsday Ark = 175

TOTAL = 995

One Harbinger attaches to each Warrior squad, the Lord goes with the Immortals.
It has a bit more shooting than I'd prefer (I don't really like Doomsday Arks in low point games), but I couldn't come up with a better use for the model at this point level.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
If you're willing to get a 2nd Battleforce [using 2x Battleforce box, 2x Barge box, 1x Overlord] you can make a pretty good 1500 point army-

Overlord (Scythe, MS Scarabs) = 115
+Command Barge (Gauss cannon) = 80
2x Lord (Scythe, ResOrb) = 75

20 Warriors = 260 (+ Lord)
+Ghost Ark = 115
20 Warriors = 260 (+ Lord)
+Ghost Ark = 115
10 Immortals (tesla) = 170

10 Scarabs = 150

Annihilation Barge = 90

Using the OldCron tactic of "Walk across the board", with ResOrb Lords and Ghost Arks in support, those two bricks of Warriors will have your opponent ripping his hair out in frustration trying to deal with them. (alternatively, if you really want to troll your opponent, you can split one 20 Warrior brick in half and stick 10 Warriors in each Ark (stick their Lord in with the Immortals). THEN, flank the remaining 20 Warrior brick with BOTH Arks. Basically, with a ResOrb in the unit, and two Ghost Arks pumping out fresh Warriors each turn, there ain't no way that squad is going to die!)
With Scarabs and a Barge Overlord, you've got anti-tank covered.
The Immortals and the Annihilation Barge should be able to handle infantry.

I just restarted playing Necrons since the new codex came out. I shelved them last spring when GK came out because I was having so many issues with them. Now - watch out! Here's what I'm running with a fair amount of success: Warrior blobs. Who would have guessed!

HQ: Overlord with orb/MS/weave/Phaeron
RC: Pulstek, Vieltek

HQ: Overlord with orb/MS/weave/Phaeron
RC: Pulstek, Vieltek

Troops: 13 Warriors
Troops: 13 Warriors

FA: 4 Scarabs
FA: 5 Scarabs

One lord, pulsetek and vieltek with each warrior unit. Now you have two units that can shoot 13 S4 shots at 24" or 26 S4 shots at 12", 3 S5 AP3 shots at 12" and 1 S8 AP2 at 36". That's a lot of dakka if you can get within 12". That's what the veiltek does - get's you in close quickly. Before I included the vieltek I was taking a lot of shots trying to get in range of whatever I wanted to shoot at. Now I just pop on over and surprise! Can't do it if they have a lot of missiles - unless that's what you're about to take out. You just need to avoid assaults. And try to double team with both warrior squads if possible to make sure you have enough fire power to wipe out your intended target. Taking out one unit per turn is nothing to sneeze at.

The pulseteks give you two rounds of night fighting which give the scarabs at least a fighting chance to get to something with minimal casulties. Let me tell you those guys can mess up vehicles or multi-wound models. I had one unit strip off a carnifex's armor save once.

I've tried running the vehicles: command barge, monolith & annihilation barge. While they did ok it seemed like they always died to one volley of fire from long fangs or anyone with a multimelta. While my warrior brick may get reduced by such shots they generally can walk into your opponents kill box and survive a couple rounds of shooting.

Just my two cents...

The 'Two Battleforce Starter Army' is pretty legit, but just keep in mind: the Necron 2nd wave of models are coming out in about 2 weeks, so you may want to think about adding some Wraiths and/or Spyders...
(I'd still recommend getting at least 2 Barges, no matter what. I find myself using 5 in some games, they're just that useful!)

Same here. I thought I was so smart when I magnetised one so it can be either but after playing a few games I quickly saw how both are truly amazing. Fielding 5 Barges is a no-brainer when I am coming up with Army Lists. I own 4 atm and will mostly likely get another.

Now back to the Op's question.
If you are playing on buying another Ghost arc, then just save up for another BattleForce, it will save you more money and give you all the troops ( or conversion bits) you will ever need.
The Ghost Arc can be made so you can field it either the Ghost Arc or DoomsDay Ark and I suggest you do that to save on money. There are various videos and blogs that show how to do this. I just made the Ghost arc, glued the Transported Warriors to a bit of Sprue so you can slide them in or place the gun in. Just make sure you don't glue on the Prow.
I can't really recommend using the DDA but it never hurts to have the option.

CCB/Annihilation Barge + Overlord is a great deal and will flesh out your army more. The second wave models will be your most effective units so keep that in mind when building your army.
