Hey,
So i have just started playing recently and my friend is really trying to get me into the tourney scene but he has little good to say about Vanillia space marines. Are they really that bad or is he just trying to psyche me out? I have invested quite a bit into my nillarines and am not really looking forward starting a new army considering i have just started with them. I am running a Vulkan Dread list that looks really cool and on paper seems like it would stand a fair chance againt most armies, maybe not a win all the time but I could probably make it to atleast turn 4 before losing. I understand that there are stronger dexes and that i probably should have gone with team Jacob or Edward marines but I didn't. If i have doomed myself I suppose i could just use the new Chaos dex when it comes out and run as renegades. Someone please comfort me. ty.

C:SM are quite strong and do very well. They can't spam force weapons like GK, they can't longfang like SW, nor can they FNP like BA, but they have more tricks than any other books.

Want 6 dreads? Done. All bike army? Sure. Twin link all the meltas and flamers? Go right ahead. First turn assault with scouts? It's all yours. And much more.

No, Nilla marines are not that bad at all. They are tough enough to hang with the best. In the competitive league I am in currently, the top three players are BA, BA, and SM, in that order.

They're not the strongest, but they can definitely hold their own.

Codex: Space Marines is, as it pretty much always has been, dead in the middle competitively. They're a solid codex with lots of good choices (and a few bad ones) and are honestly my favorite codex in the game right now.

Chaos Space Marines are not as bad everyone whines about, mainly because there are no easy builds for it. Its kinda like playing Dark Angels, its 40K on hard mode.

Wait, are you talking Chaos Space Marines or Codex: Space Marines? Abbreviations cause confusion...

Basic vanilla marines are tougher, harder to kill and better all around troops than many other armies out there. Sure they aren't Blood Angels, Grey Knights of Space Wolves and don't have those armies' special rules, but that by no means makes them useless. The basic Space Marine codex is a great list and can be just as competitive as any other list out there. Don't worry about your friend as they obviously are caught up in the glitz and glitter. A solid and balanced army that is played well trumps the uber army almost every time in my personal experience. People who play a list *expecting* it will always win just because of its codex are not always thinking in tactically sound ways because they think that their army guarantees them a win. You can take full advantage of that with your "woefully underpowered" vanilla marines. Build the army you want to play and enjoy it. Don't let your friend ruin *your* desires for the game. Space Marines are the single most popular force in the game for a reason.

For a force that is completely underpowered and not worth using I have yet to lose a battle when playing my Chaos Space Marines. I have other armies and don't have that same unbeaten type streak with them. I've even had losses with my regular space marines, but somehow my chaos marines remain undefeated. Doesn't matter which army I use (khorne, nurgle or slaanesh), they just always win for me. I don't know if the chaos gods just favor me and improve my die rolling when I play them or what.

To the OP, CSM is the abbreviation for Chaos Space Marines. C:SM or simply SM is the abbreviation for Codex: Space Marines. I was also confused until I read your post.

As has been said, Codex: Space Marines offers more variety than any other codex, in my humble opinion. It's not over-powered, but you can make some solid, well-rounded lists, a very shooty list, or a very assaulty list.

It's a fun codex, and I like it a lot.

C:SM isn't currently part of the metagame, rather it's the signature army of the 40K universe, and pretty much dead in the middle of balance. Some builds are OP *cough*vulkan*cough* but all in all, it's a standard codex with standard rules and power involved.

...so edit your post so its right. And I think C:SM (SM) are the best codex to collect. Never gets old for me. If I was stuck with only my stuff from one dex, I would go C:SM.

C:SM are very solid. One of my friends put it succinctly: they may not have the big obvious advantages of BA and SW, they have a bunch of little advantages that add up.

I started as a nilla player and my most favorite thing was Combat Tactics. It is such an underrated ability IMO. I'd take it over red thirst any time.

One advantage that SM have over SW is that the tac marines have a sgt with his LD9 to help keep the squad from breaking before you want to.

They also have cheap TH/SS termies and get access to Relic Blades.

Oh and Null Zone is one of the best powers ever.
