Well some friends of mine are getting me into Warhammer: 40K now and I'm going with Blood Angels. (On account of them being Necrons, Tyranids, Chaos Space Marines, Orcs, and Tau.) So, can someone give me a list of all of the stuff I need to buy? I'm not buying the 50 dollar rule book though. (Friend has one we all share.) I mean should I get the Battleforce for B.A.s? I've been looking on Gamesworkshop at all of the different troops, HQs, etc. And I just don't know where to start! And can someone also mention specific paint names for the Blood Angels? (Death Company included) And I plan on sort of making an army that focuses on close and long range attack sort of. I'm going to have at least one Death Company and one Troop of normal B.A. and some Jumpers. So yeah, any help?

Well, if you want to have Jumpers, tacticals and DC in one list I think you're best bet would be a "Jumper" list.

Don't buy the battleforce, the rhino would be a waste for the type of list you are talking about (unless you want to go hybrid, which is half assault marines and half troops in vehicles but this is considered sub par in gaming)

BA's are tricky to build and model, because you want 10 man squads of assault marines but the GW kits include 5 models only.

So to build a full squad you want 1 box of assault marines and 1 box of death company (so you get 10 legs over all, 10 jumpacks, nice Blood Angel specific pieces to make your models look sexy and you get bits left over if you wanna bling up squad leaders / characters)

You would want Devastator squads with 4x missile launchers hanging in the backfield to give fire support for your whole army while your death company, assault squads and tacticals are rushing their one flank

If you are deadset on tactical squads and deathcompany, for this type of list I would recommend Drop pods for both of them so you keep them low cost, a turn 1 drop that can't mishap and people are not used to Drop pods in general so you have that tactical advantage because when It comes to Blood Angels, everyone comes prepared with lots of anti tank, as you can tell, their anti tank weapons will be useless against your troops!

Here is a sample 500 point list I have written that is mean and deadly up close that should also be simple enough to teach you basic concepts of the game, such as:
- Shooting
- Assaults
- Special rules such as Furious Charge and Feel No Pain
- AV1 Weaponry and Melta
- Instant Death
- Deep Striking
- Psychic Powers

Here is the list

Librarian 125pts
- Jump pack
- Unleash Rage and Shield of Sanguinius

Sanguinary Priest 105pts
- Infernus Pistol
- Power sword
- Jump pack

Assault Squad 135pts
- 5 Marines
- Power Fist
- Meltagun

I honestly don't know how people aren't embarrassed when fielding this kind of stuff, and it's not like its something pro-tem as the same pair of legs seem to make an appearance week after week, smiting in the name of the Emperor. You can imagine the legs in a display cabinet, gathering dust.

I find Mr.E's Guide pretty helpful. Just remember that this if from a pure "economics" point of view, feel free to try out your own stuff! But when starting an army, knowing that the stuff you buy is actually useful always gives a warm fuzzy feeling

Oh and whatever you do with your Blood Angels, stay away from the Battleforce

Well I would say stay away from the battleforce until you have a decent size army built up. I bought one for my local GW's 28 day challenge (you bought a battle force/character/book and painted it up within 28 days to get a patch) and used it to make a devastator squad, honor guard, and 10 man assault squad. Since the Rhino comes with the Razorback top hatch I painted that up and I use my Land Raiders Assault Cannon turret for it. But like I said, stay away from this for a while.....

Starting out, I would recoment buying 2 DC and 2 Assault Marine box sets and a librarian.

Also, you can kitbash a priest relativly easily. I bought the Dark Angels Veteran Box and used that make a libby and a priest. They look great with the robes and with all the spare bits from the DC boxes you can BA them up.

One list is all mech with loads of tanks. It's very shooty and has high strength and low AP guns. It can do combat reasonably well.

Second list is just as fast moving, though has double number of marines. Not as much death dealing fire power, though a lot more choppy choppy.
