So, building a newbie army for HE at 1000pts, considering I recently bought an army from someone on here. Here's what I have, and my rough idea:(PS, I also plan on getting a box of Spearmen)

What I have:
Island of Blood Prince on a Griffon
Island of Blood Mage
21 Archers
40 Spearmen
1 Musician
1 Standard Bearer
5 Dragon Princes
8 Silver Helms
4 Bolt throwers
Prince with a sword
Prince with a bow

So, what I think it should be (rough estimate):

My sword Prince and my mage
30ish Spearmen
10 archers
5 Dragon princes or 7-8ish Silver Helms
and maybe a Bolt thrower.

I would really appreciate feedback!

Shooting works fairly well at low levels so maybe something like

mage level 2 with the staff of hoath on shadow.

10 archers

10 archers with muso and standard and fire banner

2 bolt throwers

BSB with great weapon and maybe the +2 save with reroll set up

fill the rest in with spearmen.

Use the staff to make sure you get the withering and mind razor. Debuff an enemy units toughness and unload on it with your shooting, Once the enemy are in charge range mindrazor your spear elves and go to shred the biggest baddest unit they have.

HEs are terrible at 1000pts so good luck =)

I havent done to badly with these guys @ this point level, partly in thanks to as you mentioned Lore of Shadow with lots of Seguard and Bolt Throwers Jubear is correct shooting works great for us @ lower point games especially with the shadow buffs, High Magic is also useful with Curse of Arrow Attraction and Flames of Phoenix @ small points as well, have fried untold numbers of skaven doing that!

Yeah we seem solid till a skaven player shows up with a greyseer 2xWLCs and 200 or so slaves

So shooting in the beginning?

What about a list like this? Will it do good?

your list is not legal....you need 3 non hero units in an army.

I tend to avoid combat lords,heroes in a HE army due to the fact our elites are killy as hell so unless I need a one for a specific purpose I dont bother.

Banner of sorcery really is great but not when all you are running is a level 2, you really need atleast 4 levels of magic to make it worth taking

I shy away from dragon princes and silver helms because cavalry lacks the ability to break steadfast units, In larger games they are useful to threaten small units of missile troops or warmachines.

Is that a new 8th edition thing? I'm pretty new to this Fantasy stuff

I've heard Dragon princes are great all the time. But the only other special units i've really "considered' is Dragon princes, Silver Helms, Phoenix Guard and White Lions.

8th edition aint so new anymore but just read the choosing your army rules for clarification.

Main problem with all heavy cav is they are expensive and simply cant beat steadfast units, they cause a gakload of wounds on the charge but usually not enough to remove steadfast.

HE elite infantry is awesome sauce tho so pick any unit you like its all good.

Would you say a squad of White Lions is good?

Yup cant go wrong S6 attacks rerolls and stubborn not to mention extra saves against shooting is wonderful. They work bect in units of around 30 but units of 10 combined with the conga line tactic will hold up most things for a few turns

I'm pretty sure 30 White Lions isn't available at 1000pts, so 10 will do for now!

OH you could get them in but yeah nearly half your army in one unit is a bit silly

Recently tried an army I liked, so I'll post what I have so far. I boosted it up to 1500pts, cause I had no clue higher point games were easier for Fantasy.

Here's what I remember having:

Archmage, lvl 4 (forget what equipment he had besides the Seerstaff)

About 46ish Spear Elves

a 20 man squad of Phoenix Guard

and a 20 man squad of Swordsmasters.


And I distinctly remember one of those two 20 man squads carrying a standard of magic.

46 spearmen is too many. take 25-30 of them and some archers to meet your core, or run 2 units of 25. They are IMO too expensive to run bigger than 30.

See if you can't bump the PG to 25 to max out static CR, they make a great bunker for the mage.

Swordsmen are best in small 2 rank units. 10-14 is ideal.


As for HE list building in general:
Shadow Warriors, Reavers, and Silver Helms are pretty much never to be taken as they are a waste of points.
Sea Guard are IMO overpriced for what they do, especially when compared to DE crossbowmen.
Bolt Throwers are also rather lackluster for the points they cost.

Great Eagles are awesome. Take at least 2 in any army over 1500, at least 1 under that.

I may just break them into two squads then. I hate archers. They really don't work for me.

I might try that next time I play.


Already learned that about Silver Helms and I've heard bad things about the other two
Sea guard aren't anything special. Honestly, more defensive, but not worth it IMO
Oh yeah, I don't really care for bolt throwers. I'll throw them in if I have 100pts I don't want to throw anywhere else, cause I'd rather get more spear elves.
