So I finally decided to stop having my boxes gathering dust and start (albeit slowly) assembling and painting them.

Now, my question was to paint them as the Great Company, but now I'm kind of having second thoughts... I plan to use a Rune Priest and/or Wolf Priests as HQ's, but also have Logan, Njal and have a half-done kitbash Ragnar. That leads to my question: would it be considered fluffy if I paint some squads with different Company Badges? (as in, say, 1 Long Fangs and 1 Grey Hunters with GC's, other grey hunters with Ragnar's, other grey hunters with Egil's and so on).

It's fluffy, you could base them in snow and say they're defending Fenris. Boom.

York/London(for weekends) oh for the glory of the british rail industry

Most chapters do not fight as single companies on the battle field:
1. Multiple chapters fight alongside each other during campaigns
2. Companies will use the scout company and reserve companies to fill tactical gaps
3. A threat could be too great for a single great company to face
4. Defending a chapter's homeworld or another planet in its solar system would see multiple companies, if not the whole chapter go to war.

Bluntman, while true, the SW companies are by large autonomous, but, considerin' you 4th point as well as Dakkadood, I might do it, but restrain me to no more than 3 or 4 at most.

Thanks a lot.

it will also help break the monotony of painting all the minis the same way.

I don't think that there is any reason why the companies should not fight together, and with space wolves the amount of background you can give them is really large. Also Logan is the great wolf so he would have the power to say well we need this done (insert story here) and Ragnar and some other wolf lord are sent of together with Njal as an overseer type misson, so just go for it
