So i know the story behind them, once the firehawks, caught in a warp storm, driven mad but still loyal to the empire. But what is their over all goal, is it just fight until they are all killed in battle, or do they have a higher goal. IE rebuilding their chapter, trying to find a way to get there sanity back, save humans that are about to me killed?

To many unpainted models to count.

JSF wrote:... this is really quite an audacious move by GW, throwing out any pretext that this is a game and that its customers exist to do anything other than buy their overpriced products for the sake of it. The naked arrogance, greed and contempt for their audience is shocking.

This is not confirmed anywhere. It's suggested, but so many things are to give people the angle to pick their own favourite theory.

I like to think it's Tzeentch, either using the Legion to turn the tides on battles it can't be seen participating in. Or possibly working towards a larger plan, a great betrayal.

It'd sure explain their invulnerable save.

I prefer to think of them as avenging spirits. Not diseased Marines.

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"

The whole nature of the LOD makes it hard to determine their purpose; the fact that their origin is widely debated makes it hard to say what their purposes and goals are. Personally, I think that their purpose is to save fellow space marines in dire need of help.
