So now I am really getting into Chaos and the more I think about it the book Only in Death really gets into that side of chaos no one really talks about. What did you guys think about the book and its portrayal of chaos?

Only in Death was the Ghost book on Gereon right? If not, remind me... I've only read the omnibus edititions and I keep losing track of the titles

Only in Death is the one with the fortress that seems to be haunted...Traitor General is the Gereon one (and they went back there in Armour of Contempt).

Only in Death can be pretty atmospheric, and I though the "ghost story" elements worked better than I would have expected, but I think the book that really gives the most detailed description of Chaos is Traitor General.

Thanks Fezman.

I did love Only in Death - as you say, very atmospheric. I would agree it's not quite so "Chaotic" though, the hauntings made it sound much older, as if it pre-dated the Chaos invasion rather than being caused by Chaos.

Gereon was better for a description of what Chaos does to a world. Especially for the long term. There are some parts in other books as well. The one that immediately comes to mind is on Phantine in one of the domes (The name of the book escapes me, as do specific details, it's been a while since I read them all...) But when the Ghosts were patrolling though some of the streets, they came upon a bank and noted that the coins had all been disfigured. I remember Larkin remarking to Bragg that it would have taken someone a long time to do such a thing, and that really struck me as the Blood Pact being singularly dedicated to wiping out all traces of the Imperium - right down to individual symbols on coins.

Have you read "Blood Pact" yet?

Kanluwen: As it happens I did indeed remember the relevance of Blood Pact and Salvation's Reach here but by the time I remembered I wasn't able to get online easily enough to post about them.

Now I can belatedly rectify that - OP, those two books are worth a look if you're interested in Dan Abnett's portrayal of Chaos, as a former Blood Pact officer becomes a recurring character. If I had a criticism of the Gaunt books it would be that I don't think the villains are fleshed out much until Traitor General, but from then on, things change.

I had forgotten about the bits in the plateau city in Guns of Tanith. I remember there was a bit of time spent among slaves in that one and those parts were pretty grim, whereas Traitor General was also quite dark and had moments of what I can only call weirdness.

Well yes the long term effects and details are better played out in the Gereon missions....but did you think the portrayal of the more "haunted" side of chaos fit the 40k universe well as was portrayed in only in death?
