Hello guys.

I asked some questions here a while back about starting Hordes and since the answers I got were so good I decided to get your thoughts on my next few purchases.

So far I own:
- Legion of Everblight Forces Book
- Legion of Everblight Battle Box.
I had a blast painting these guys and followed all your advice about pinning and green stuffing joints which worked a treat. I missed out on the plastic releases and my battle box was metal, which I didn't mind at all once I got into it, and was surprising to me as I've hated painting metal minis in the past.

I'm looking at spending a bit over the $100 mark (prices here are the same as on the PP site) to bulk out my army with a nice variety of extra miniatures, but needed some guidance since I have been unable to play a game yet. I went to my FLGS to get some advice but they didn't know the rules of the game at all so decided to consult you guys before I make any rash purchases.

Now I don't own the main rule book as of yet. Should this be in my next set of purchases? I was advised not to buy it when I made my first post on here but with my FLGS inability to teach me any rules or run me through some games I'm thinking I may have to buy it. Even without playing a game I see some huge holes in the quickstart rules, Esp after reading through my Forces Book I was pretty much left with more questions than answers. One of the main problems I had was thinking I could sit down and make a list to decide what I wanted to buy, the quickstart rules do not cover how to make a list :(. It looks pretty straight forward but my confusions lies around the point costs of my Warlocks and the stats that cover warbeast allowance?? Is this a limitation cap or bonus points??, also the Field Allowance rule. The QS Rules also do not cover the use of units which puts me in the dark on which ones to purchase.

So what I got from the QS Rules is that it looks hard to run more than 5 Beasts with Lylyth and still manage their Fury without adding in a couple of Shepherds or Forsaken. As my battle box came with 5 beasts, I'm pretty much capped on them without the Shepherd/Forsaken.

From that, the start to my purchase list was going to be:
1 MKII Primal Rule Book, Softcover (This is the mainstream rule book? again they listed a few on the PP Website. If you think I can avoid buying it still let me know)
1 Shepherd
1 Forsaken

Then I was going to get you guys to help me from there. Maybe another Warbeast or two and a Unit of some sort? I'd like to have a decently balanced force that will be fun for myself to play and my opponent to v's. This is an important point for me, with the lack of people who play Hordes around here I'd like to increase the chances they want to play again rather than dismiss me as some WAAC player.

Anyway throw in your thoughts and opinions!
Thanks Dakkadites!!

P.S. I'll put in a pic of my army so far, I was really happy with the way they turned out.

Primal is a must have to play beyond the battle box level, but If you weren't sure it was going to stick, the quickstart rules are enough to sink your teeth in to. Sounds to me like you are pretty in so go ahead and buy primal mk2.
The shepherd and forsaken are good fury management models and hard to go wrong with, but there aren't many general must-haves. Are there any models you like the looks of?

Bakerofish- Thanks! I did them in blue to start but it was very dark so stripped them and went with purple.

Dais- There is nothing in the range I dislike. Things I would like to paint are:

Beasts: Raek, Seraph, Nephilim Bolt Thrower,
Units: Warspears, Striders, Warmongers, Hex Hunters, Raptors
Solos: Shepherd, Incubi, Nyss Sorceress & Hellion

As I said though I don't dislike everything so its pretty much a choice based on how they play and good fun synergies. Which I need a bit of help with since I have not played a game.

Spokane, WAAAAAGH!

I'm fairly new to Legion and Hordes as a gaming system. However I have found that your warcaster is the first thing you need to love, then build around him/her/it. If your planning on sticking with Lylyth her Epic version isn't so reliant on her being in the thick of it. And her Epic feat is more directed at fast shooters like the blighted archers. I've used basic Lylyth with just the battle box about ten times now. While I've grown to like her, her fury just isn't up to pair with how fast she is. Her spells are great, especially with auto hitting after she shoots her target. But she has bushwack and at times you'll find yourself out of range of your shredders, just watch out for that. Just a word of advice: If you have a your little shredders bust there threshold, no worries, they are just as good when they go berserk. If a shredder uses his rapid* then runs, he goes 16 inchs right into position for a caster assassination. Thats the time you want him to bust that threshold. Shredders you don't really have to manage anyway, in the battle box all your fury should be leeched of the carnivean. If he busts his threshold you miss out on all his attacks and that severely reduces his damage potential. Wow I kinda rambled on there. Anyways, your paint job looks fantastic! Hope this helps.

^ make sure you listen to GoF. The first rule of army building in warmahordes is to love your warnoun (ie, warcaster or warlock). In my not-so-humble opinion, anyway.

If you are looking for things that run well with Lylyth, there are a couple of things in the list of things you like that can help. The bolt thrower is easily the best of the Nephilim, because he has critical knockdown on his POW 14 (!!) bow. This can make it even easier to hit with Lylyth's bow so you can save her fury for casting Parasite. As mentioned, the Striders and Raptors are great for her.

A shepherd is a great option as well, because she can hang out with the bolt thrower, allowing them to operate independently. She does this by forcing him, then wiping his fury so Lylyth doesn't have to, and so he doesn't necessarily need to be as close to her.

Things to get:

Primal (Do it, its worth every penny).
Legion Heavy Plastic kit (Amazingly awesome, and the price is fantastic)
Magnets
Pin Vise with varied size kit.

Then magnetize that sucka up and you have a model that can easily swap between another Carni, a Scythean or a Ravagore.

Later, if you'd like, you could also purchase the Proteus upgrade kit, magnetize it as well and bam, a fourth option.

I have magnetized two heavy kits and will be using my battle box Carni as a Proteus/Carni magnetized model.

This way I have 3 heavies who are all variable.

Legion loves their Heavies, so get them, love them, and win.

The paint finish on the plastic bits that are magnetized won't look different then the metal body that was painted will it?

Ok so I took your advice and read through all the Warlocks back stories and reread their rules and I still like Lylyth. So it looks like I'll try build a somewhat ranged army if that's what shes effective with.

So my purchase list is going to be something like this:

MKII Primal Rulebook
1 Heavy Warbeast Plastic Kit (Run as a Ravagore, Will magnetize for other options as well)
6 Striders
1 Strider Officer and Musican UA
1 Annyssa Ryvaal
3 Raptors

Would this be a good start to a ranged army to run with Lylyth?

My list would run something like this, I'm not positive how the tier system works but I think I meet its requirements for the Lylyth one:

Lylyth, Herald of Everblight ( 6 Bonus)

Warbeasts:
Carnivian + 11
Ravagore +10

Units:
3 Raptors +6
6 Striders with UA +9

Solos:
Annyssa Ryvaal +4

34 Points.

Would this list do any good? Seems very small to some of the lists I see in the army list section lol, I'm unsure how a ranged list is meant to look for Legion though.

Haha, anymore help you can offer would be appreciated guys!!

Proteus is the only metal pieces, the Heavy is an all plastic kit. This is why I'm using my Carni from the Battle box since it too is metal like the Proteus kit. But more than the paint, its a matter of weight. That metal head needs a stronger magnet to hold than the plastic kit heads so I needed to use a bigger/stronger magnet for him.

That looks good. I'd also highly recommend picking up the something to fill in that last pt to push it up to 35 pts as that is the standard.

1 Point models you should get:
Shepherds! Get one, and love it. Really will work well with Lylyth and that list. Will heal beasts, calm them down, and extend your forcing range, pretty sweet.
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew - Its one pt, and can create a 5" cloud. Its great for blocking LOS and Lylyth has eyeless sight so she can hide in the cloud and still target her enemies.
Spell Martyrs - These guys are invaluable in a lot of lists. I think Lylyth can do without them as she's not a huge spell slinger, and her bow handles business.

Other Models for Lylyth - When it comes out, pick up the Succubus, it'll be invaluable to Lylyth's lists along with nearly every caster we have. Its our one and only Warlock attachment and its fantastic.

I'm a huge Scythean fan, and its 2 pts cheaper than the Carni, has a longer threat range (if we ignore the Rat 4 10" spray of the Carni), and deals comparable damage to other targets. With those extra two pts you can easily fit in more support pieces which she needs being only Fury 5.

Deathstalkers - These guys are 2 pts each and are amazingly good. They are base RAT 8!, pow 10 range 12" with Snap Fire (if you destroy one target you can shoot another, just like Annyssa) and Sniper, which means if they hit a target, they can choose to not roll for damage and put a single pt of dmg on them, and for beasts they can choose which branch this damage goes to. What does this mean on the table? It means you have a 2 pt super fast stealth sniper who can reliably take down two single wound models a turn. If you double up on these guys, for 4 pts you can take down 4 models a turn. They are amazingly good and many take two of them in place or in addition to the Striders+UA.

I've been playing a while and I've found that lists that rely completely on JUST melee or just ranged tend to have problems. Mixed arms is a good way to go. Having a heavy beater for back up is a great idea and at higher pt levels I'd say 2 heavy beaters is necessary. Also, don't forget that the Raptors are Spd 9 Weapon masters! They can rock it in melee but Annyssa is ranged only. Annyssa also provides a +2 Rat buff to the Raptors if she is in their LOS when they shoot. Its amazing.

Enjoy the game and let us know how it goes!

Ah! Okay then. I have just been reading about magnets and I was going to go with a 2x1.5mm for limbs/heads etc. Is that a good size for a newbie using legion beasts? I can't figure out what bit size the Army Painter drill set comes with, I hope it has a big enough set. Also is Green stuff required to have a good bond with metal figures, or can I just rough it up with a hobby knife and use PP's glue?

I'd recommend using Greenstuff, pinning and glue. It holds even when dropped or travelling. It takes some time, but really worth it in the end. I regret not pinning my models, and plan on doing so as they fall apart over time lol.

Lylyth is not necessarily ranged as her feat simply adds attack
dice. What makes her more ranged than melee is her constrained
10" control area. It's much easier to fit ranged elements in her
control area than it is to extend melee units out. However, don't
discount the melee, like Warmongers and such.

This is very true. Like I've said, a mixed arms force usually does better than a ranged or melee focused army. Its not to say those don't work, but they suffer from lack of versatility.
