I've been working on a Genestealer cult army for a while now, slowly building up some models with limited resources (money).
Originally I was working on a Genestealer cult fandex but balancing it out is a pig and my models are acquiring dust, so for the moment I'm trying to figure out an Imperial guard equivalent list.

With a few magus', some hybrids, some of those fat looking hybrids, a handful of brood brothers (converted catachan), a huge amount of genestealer new and old and ofc a Patriarch I can finally set out a small army of around a 1000 pts or so.

Unfortunately I don’t know very much about IG. I was hoping to keep things in theme with the magus' as psykers and maybe (base size permitting) the patriach as a Primaris Psyker. The fatty hybrids have a few rocket launchers between them so maybe a heavy squad (?) and the brood brothers as troops.
I can acquire other models for proxies in my local group so not much trouble.

Really I just need advice on building a casual IG army keeping to the model themes I have.

Any ideas would really help

Thanks

Lumpy

(edited to add genestealers to the list. Somehow I forgot them)

Patriarch as Primaris

Magus as Psyker Battle Squad

Platoons for your brood brothers with Hybrids with heavies as Heavy Weapon Teams
Genestealer Hybrids as Penal Legion
Cultists as Conscripts

Limos as Chimeras

etc so on.

I am getting a Cult army together at the moment and started off using the IG codex. I was going to use Stracken in a CCS as the patriarch as he was closest to a partiarch in terms of CC. Vets = hybrids, infantry units as cultist, psykers = magus etc. the main problem with this arrangement is you dont really to get to field genestealers in a way that is satisfying. you can work most of the army in such a way that is sticks to the background fluff... but the lack of nice rip-the-ass-out-of-everything purestrains is too much to bear.

I am now using the tyranid list;

hormagaunts = gs hybrids
termagaunts = cultists
tyranid alpha (for now) = broodlord

etc etc

(weird chapel/tank hybrid vehicle as tervigon spitting out cultists

either can work i think, it just depends on how you want to field an army and what you want to go with.

I've heard of people running successful Genestealer Cults as Orks. Hybrids = boys, Cult members= Grots, Purestrain Stealers = Nobs. The ramshackle ork trukks and wagons also give you a wide array of potential cult vehicles. Just another option.

I would do this but.........unfortunately/fortunately I already run a 'nid army. IG just seemed to have quite alot in common with how I could lay out the guards. I will agree with you on not knowing what to use pure strains for though. I dont think they would give me the usual pleasure, are there any CC dedicated units in IG they could subsitute?

I'll have to post a list of what I've currently got when I'm at home. Just to give you an idea.

Thanks

Ah well i guess if you have nids already then a nid-cult list would be a bit dull. I can see why Orks could be good - you get to have shooty tanks but also come good CC units which genestealers could slot into. off the top of my head i dont think i saw anything in the IG list that would do genestealers justice.

My idea was to get 1-1.5K of cult then expand it further using pure nids as a was of having the cult begin the uprising just as the Skymother arrives and begins eating the planet, having lots of mycetic spores would be pretty groovy to represent that.

Ooooo I do like that idea. If ever I want to expand my 'nids I may have to dip into my cult...

Nice! Really appreciate what you're trying to do here.

Reading the first Commissar Cain- For the Emperor (Spoiler alerts). The genestealer cult is just being revealed, very cool!

The local planetary defense force (PDF) is infiltrated/hybridized and the hive mind is very clever, attempting to set the Tau and IG against each other, so the hive feet can later waltz in.

Cain fights a scope of foes half guard/hybrid and purestrains. Guard makes heaps more sense than Orks to me. To keep your list fluffy you will be limiting yourself with the ork dex choices. Not so with guard.

Straken is a great HQ choice- stat wise- but also game and fluff-wise for the furious charge/counter attack bubble. Hive mind ish. For fun, why don't you just re-name all their orders. Creed for genius hive mind.

Penal legion for outflank and potential rending.

PBS. I can dig it.

You could even use the rough riders profile for something- 12' charge is pretty beasty.

The hybrid PDF still has some more human guard units (take some tanks if you want)- their commander appears human but is revealed at the end as hybrid lol.

Good luck! Have fun

I have in fact read the first Cain book as research really has pushed me on to get the army complete or at least organised....

I looked at rough riders, I've heard their not amazing but I've been half collecting some old style bikes (squat trikes etc) to make a rough and ready cult version. I liked the idea that horses probably wouldn’t react well to such grotesque rider so they use bikes stolen and salvaged from whatever they can find.

I liked the idea of the penal legion being cult slaves, thrown into battle not caring if they make it, also it means i can build up numbers without having to spend too much on cultist.

I've also given the cultist a mix of laspistols and autopistols, just to give that stolen arsenal look of it

All ideas are very welcome!

Thanks

LL

As for the rough riders I was more thinking you would use something like arco-flagellants, maybe with some tyrranid bits. The hybridization has made them unnaturally fast + aggressive (rather than riding a horse or bike),
You could maybe strap on some explosives or molotov cocktails to represent the s5 i5 power weapon attack of the initial assault, or say something fluffy like 'acid bio sack.' just use your imagination.
