Subject: First Beastmen list - 1500

Camouflaged Zero
Where the sun crosses the field of blood.

So, recently Beastmen caught my eye. I don't know why, but for some reason I took a closer look at the Gors in my FLGS and kind of fell for them.
So, to try and understand how they work better I made a list (I guess everyone does this), to be the list I'm aiming to build once I get started.
Here goes:
Lords: 218
Beastlord
Great Weapon, Heavy Armour
Gnarled Hide
Ramhorn Helm, Dawnstone
= 218
Heroes: 266
Wargor
Battle Standard Bearer
Heavy Armour, Shield
= 116
Bray-Shaman (Lore of Beasts)
Level 2
Dispell Scroll, Opal Amulet
= 150
Core: 426
Gor Herd (29)
Add. HW
Full Command
= 257
Gor Herd (19)
Add. HW
Full Command
= 177
Special: 306
Bestigor Herd (23)
Full Command
= 306
Rare: 275
Ghorgon - 275
So, that's that. I run every unit six wide. 19-man Gor Herd is in ambush.
Is this a decent/good list? Something I should change? Any advice you can give, or some things that I better keep in mind regarding Beastmen?

I like it, love the ghorgon too. My only recommendation is to maybe scrap the 2nd gor unit and add some numbers to the existing gors, add some raiders and add a standard of discipline to that bestigor unit for some LD10. I like Ambush but the rule is you should never ambush what you can't afford to lose and at 1500 pts those 19 gor make a big chunk of your army. So I am gonna write a new list, with a little tweaking but not like a major overhaul.
Beastlord 207
-Armor of Destiny
-Great Weapon
(I like this build slightly more then the heavy armor save build due to things like killing blow or really high strength attacks at least you get a ward save)
Wargor 141
-BSB
-HA
-Shield
-Gnarled Hide
-Banner of Eternal Flame
(You have limited ways to deal with ethereal and regen, this will help, though the Beast Banner would help boost your gor to S4 which is a huge step up from S3)
Bray Shaman 150
-Level 2
-Dispel Scroll
-Opal Amulet
Gor x38 329
-AHW
-FC
(with the shaman and BSB here you can stick them in the corners and minimize attacks against them and therefore the survivability of them, also allows for an extra rank to attack)
Ungor Raidersx5 33
-Musician
Ungor Raidersx5 33
-Musician
(These guys are here for harassment and redirection, you can ambush one)
Bestigor Herd x24 333
-Full Command
-Standard of Disc.
(add Beastlord and you get a LD10 bubble, keep your BSB in the corner of the gors nearest the bestigor and your beastlord in the corner of your bestigor enarest the gors so both of your blocks benefit from LD10 and BSB rerolls for the Primal Fury!)
Ghorgon 275
1500 on the nose.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Just saying. I personally don't find ambush worth it. Alas i've just had them not come back onto the board so many times.
I like the nice simple build of the Beast Lord. Mine personally is armed to the teeth. But it's merely personal preference. However, why not take the banner of beasts on your BSB. And stick him in with your gors. S3 gors won't go as far as s4 gors.
What lore are you considering on your shaman? I run Beasts usually. Though Shadows is also very popular. I've seen a trick where somebody runs a great-bray with a crown of command and using mist and mirrors to other blocks to give them stubborn.
Imo the Ghorgon is just too much expensive points wise for what it does. I employ giants. But damn the model is very nice. I'd get one just to use as a counts as giant.

I have a personal preference for using more smaller units rather than one large, but not sure how that works with Beastmen. I'll ponder regarding one big or two small units. Either way, it's rather easy to change a list between one or two units, just splitting them up / merging them together.
However, why not Ambush? To me it seems like something you always should use...

Could you clarify why Ambush wouldn't be worth it? I can't seem to see what could be bad...
I might pimp up my Beastlord a little more now I was just afraid to overdo it, since I play Vampires I'm used to push ALL THE POINTS into my Lord, something I know isn't as important for other armies.
Regarding the Banner, I'm a little cloven. If I give him the Beast Banner not only will he be worth a lot of points, but he would also be a rather easy kill since he won't have much of a save. The only thing I could do to fix this is give him the Scaly Skin-gift, but something in my mind tells me that the Beastlord is the one who should have earned a Gift, not the Wargor. And I can't write a list that feels wrong to me But I do really like the idea of S4 Gors... Hmm...
As for Lore, Beasts is what I'll be running. It's probly my favorite lore.

First of all, gratzs on Beastmen! Secondly I like your list, raiders are not worth their point so dont take them unless your life depends on it. Ambush can be a real hit or miss but I like it. And yes you need large blocks as Beastmen due to t shirt saves

First off, welcome to Beastmen. Secondly, I REALLY recommend you take a look at this site http://z8.invisionfree.com/herdstone/index.php? it has really good info for Beastmen Players.
Couple of things I would have you think a bit more about
--Magical weapon on your Beast Lord (I like ASF sword)
-- BSB should really be the 206 version (206 BSB = Wargor, HA, Shield, Gnarled Hide, Beast Banner)
--I would highly recommend 4+ units of Raiders, 2 for ambush.
--Bestigor's need to have a magical banner, Std of Disc is a good one
Just some thoughts.

Currently working on a refined list. Characters getting a little more oomph.
But I'm curious about raiders, there some to be a rather cloven opinion about them. Hargus included two units of them in the list he made, Trondheim swore to their ineffectivity and Grix says at least four units. Can anyone explain how you use them, and how effective they are at what they do?
Edit: The list changes so far:
Lords: 246
Beastlord
Heavy Armour
Talisman of Preservation, Ramhorn Helm
The Steel-Claws
= 246
(I find the Steel-Claws really cool. They seem very worth their points. Also, decided on Ramhorn Helm since I get so much more from it than the Dragonhelm methinks.)
Heroes: 356
Wargor
Battle Standard Bearer - The Beast Banner
Heavy Armour, Shield, Gnarled Hide
= 206
Bray-Shaman (Lore of Beasts)
Level 2
Dispell Scroll, Opal Amulet
= 150
Core: 305
Gor Herd (35)
AHW
Full Command
= 305
Special: 316
Bestigor Herd (23)
Full Command
Banner of Eternal Flame
= 316
Rare: 275
Ghorgon
Sadly though, this list is not legal. I lack 70 pts in core.
I beefed up the Lord, made my BSB awesome and swapped around numbers here and there. But now I'm stuck. I'd really prefer not to remove the Ghorgon, as I really like the model and the rules for it. So I'm not really sure what to do. I almost feel like I've placed too many points into my Characters...
Right now it seems to me that I have to drop the Scroll and Amulet from El Shamane, and drop 3 Bestigors to deploy them 5 wide instead. Then place the spare points in some Core-chaff. Or maybe a small Ambushing Gor Herd...

Lore of the WIld?
You should never touch this lore with a 8' pole.
Our best lores are Shadow and Death. Beasts is good but pointless when you start running the 206

Lore of the Wild has two good spells. And one of those spells is the subject of a rules debate (can you bray scream in CC?). I find dropping I and WS along with S/T is far better than boosting a units S/T with wildform. Also the 206 should be in every Beasts list....

This I don't understand. What would make Lore of Beasts pointless when you have the Beast Banner? Wildform is still just as good.

Because Shadow becomes the better lore with the 206 thanks to Withering./Enfeebling and Mind Razor. Also Miasma is just brilliant. I run a lvl 2 beasts sometimes but most of the time it is Shadow all the way

i mean its easier to cast beasts on beastmen... but if wild is THAT bad maybe take a level 4 shadow and a level 2 beasts for the buffs?
