Perry Miniatures has had something up their sleeve for Salute, and now it looks like they're jumping on the WW2 band wagon (though its North Africa, very different from WGF and Warlord's offerings

Not too many people on TMP were very happy about that though. It seems they agree that plastic ww2 is a wasted venture especially for a plastic master like Perry

A wasted venture? Why, just because there's competition? I'd love to see what the Perrys could bring to World War II.

Looking good. Nice to see one of the more neglected WWII theaters get some love. A bit bemused by the complaints though the Perrys tend make miniatures because they want to rather than to exploit current gaming trends. In fact I bet WWII North Africa gaming takes of big time when these are released, just as War of the Roses and Sudan did.

Some just do not feel that plastic is useful for WW2.

I mean I suppose a lot of the criticism is that a lot of Perry fans probably are not WW2 fans

I have to say I am dissapointed! 28mm WWII works best as a skirmish game, so you do not need so many minis that you could not afford them in metal. Plus I do not think that North Africa is best played as skirmish. The terrain rather suggests smaller scales and larger battles.

On the other hand I think there are still many things missing from theor existing ranges that would have cried for plastics.

My two cents,

It would have been really hard to pick any two matched sets of new plastics that I wouldn't immediately want to get my mitts on, but the Perries have managed it with these.

As said earlier I don't understand the reasons for plastic WW2 as its is inevitably a skirmish level game needing fewer figures than most periods and still leaves the big part of the budget untouched i.e tanks and vehicles. No sales here for me I am afraid.

Good luck to them though and I hope for different things next time.

Phew from me as well. I like the period but for me it would be 15/20mm for SAS/LRDG type skirmish or smaller for mass armour. It will be interesting to see what they do about vehicles and who has the space to play.

I have to say I'm surprised at this decision. I could just about understand a metals based range for skirmish gaming but you'd need a massive area to need more than a box of each. I always associate the campaign with sweeping flanks, recce, tanks, air power, vast minefields, artillery barrages and petrol but not platoons of infantry…

I also echo the comment above that with all the interesting suggestions that did come forward as to what they might do and the excitement some of those ideas generated this is a disappointment, not least at it means that effort will be devoted to this range that entirely selfishly, I would have liked to have seen used elsewhere.

I've been fans of the Perry brothers' work since their early GW stuff (I'm painting some of their Valhallans right now!) and I like that they're getting into WWII. I've got too much on my plate to start with these, but I still like that they're being made.

And look at that- They are green!

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Anyways though if you're getting excited about these, make sure to be very patient.

Taking a look at the old Salute 2011 topic (wow does time fly by?), less than half of their greens there are now out (the mounted WotR Men at Arms and the Napoleonic Russian Infantry, still do not have anything on the AWI British, Napoleonic Prussians Reserves and Austrian Infantry, and ACW Confederates)

I'm certainly not anti-Perry however I do understand why people might be frustrated.

It would arguably have been better to finish some of the Napoleonic range, such as artillery, rather than start a new range in a period which is already well provided for.

If you want WW2 there are plenty of 15mm, 1/72, 20mm, 28mm and 1/35mm ranges including plastics and metals.

Personally I have yet to see 28mm WWII Northern Africa plastics, so there.

Since having another topic on Salute Greens may be a bit redundant, some of the other major historical plastic makers are looking busy

My point is that it would be better to, say, complete their ACW range with a boxed set of artillery, than to start a completely new range.

They do seem to be modellng butterflys, a bit of Napoleonics here, AWI there topped off with some late Medievals, now start off a whole new range when most like to see the others more fleshed out..

But still they look ace and the rate the put out boxes is stunning, I look forward to anything they do but would prefer more stuff for my own time period (selfishly)...

What I've noticed with the Perrys is that they seem to only do the troops in plastic. They have done artillery for both ranges in their metal line and I would guess they have no intention to move them to plastic. If you're waiting for plastic artillery for either of those two ranges I wouldn't hold your breath. Their WOTR line is the same way.

That said the British don't thrill me but the Germans look rather nice. Whenever these come out I might have to pick up a box for skirmish (and some more tanks to paint for North Africa).

Very true

Even Victrix only has one artillery set

Then again who knows, it took Perry 3 French cavalry sets before they finally made British hussars

Perry uploaded info on their site

Akfricakorps

These are six of 14 different torsos that will make up the box set. As you can see these are not finished yet as weapon belts need fitting, some still need hair and gaps need filling, etc, plus a few repairs made!

The box will contain enough figures for a Zug or Platoon plus command section and support. They will have separate arms, where possible attached to weapons as well as separate headwear. There will be enough steel helmets for all as well as half the amount of tropical cork helmets and field caps. As well as Africa they could be used for Italy and other Mediterranean campaigns.

There is not a release date for these yet.

8th Army

These are five of the 14 different torsos that will be in the forthcoming box. Note that these models are also not completely finished.

The box will be made up of three sections, command and support (2”mortar, Boyes AT rifle and extra Bren). As with the Africakorps arms and helmets are separate. There will also be a choice of additional heads on the frame, either a few Long Range Desert Group/ SAS or enough turbaned Indian heads for the whole box, this depends on how much room there is left on the frame though. The figures could also be used in parts of the Italian campaign

There is no release date for these yet.
