So there's this hobby shop I hang around, right? It's the usual hangout for the 'nerdy' (Read as awesome) kids in my town, with a healthy crowd of grizzled, wizened elders to keep us Acolytes in line.

There is one man I've seen, who will forever have the distinction of having the most kill-tastic line I've seen. He plays mostly big games, at the very least 1750 points, and he steamrolls anyone I see him go up against, which, around this shop, is mostly Mech-IG, CSMs, Nids, some Footdar, and one guy I know of who does straight GK. He runs a triple-landraider army, two Godhammers, and one gussied up Crusader with extra armor. He slaps AssTermies in the Crusader, and Sternguards in the Godhammers. Mind you, I don't know the particulars cause I don't have any experience yet, but his game strategy goes something like this, as far as I've seen. Turn one, the Godhammers start popping tanks, and moving around to give the Sternguards good positions to stop any charges and help screen out the things that the TermiRaider strategy hates (Meltas, Dark Lances). They use PotMS to keep mobile, while still keeping the pressure on the armor. He blitzes with the LRC when it suits him, or does this counter-charge thing where he waits for the enemy to charge, breaks it up with fire from the Sternguards and LRC, and then swoops in to mop up the mess.

Any thoughts? Does this guy have something going? Or is he just absolutely nuts, and maybe lacking good competition?

He has a lot of points invested into a small amount of units, it can be very scary to play against and can wipe out someone if they are not careful. However a couple of melta guns shots can ruin his land raiders very easily. With all the points he had spent on the land raiders, sternguards and terminators he probably has only two troop choices and might find objective games hard to play.

His opponents might not play as well as him or just might not have the tools to counter such an extreme list, 3 AV14 vehicles can be really frightening. It sounds like he really knows his list though and has some experience.

Edit: also this will probably be moved to tactics

Yeah, I was kinda torn with which to put it in, since the question was mainly about the legitimacy of the line, but... Ah, no harm no foul... :/

Three LR can be a big challenge, but there are certainly counters to his list. His army is small, very expensive units. From what you've said, his tactic depends heavily on exploiting AV 14 and maneuvering. Anything that can out maneuver him would probably do well. Drop pod armies or fast melta like land speeders or bikes would take the wind out of his sails.

yea a deep strikeing list like DoA would hurt him bad as well as any fast moving meltas. You have to realize those things yes they are scary but are easy to deal with.

300 pts of MM AB in a Vulkan list will ruin his tactic. Mechdar with Dragons will ruin him as well.

Yea a 3 landraider list is a hard counter to a alot of armies. This list would be very strong against any army not packing a lot of meltas or lances like most GK and Orks armies. On the flip side melta spam lists and lance spam lists would murder this list. It seems really good for the meta at your shop until someone catches on and builds to counter it.

In an ocompetative GT level tournament this list at best will be go something like 3-3, definitly not a take all comers list.

I thought something like this might make an interesting landraider spam army for blood angels. I imagine this would be scary to face and people would struggle to find enough anti-armour to beat it down. Plus the landraiders could all have a cover save.

A dark Eldar list with lots of dark lances would just murder his army, especially if there are also lots of Wyches with haywire grenades. (Cue arrogant snickering...)
