I am thinking of getting a Rhino for my Legion of the Damned squad. Deep strike them next to the Rhino (with re-roll, it is not so bad). Get on the Rhino. Rhino moves forward 6". Shoot meltagun + multimelta/plasma cannon from inside.
Is this a crazy usage of LotD?

Legion of the Damned cannot take a rhino. Even if they could, why would you deepstrike them next to a rhino in your deployment zone? You're relying on reserve rolls (bad) and negating the bonuses of deepstrike. If you want special weapons in a rhino, get sternguard.
Best tactic for LotD is to leave them out of the list: they are pathetically overpriced, and eat up an elite slot (one less sternguard unit or Psyfledread). If you want deepstriking melta, get 1-3 landspeeders. Try it with a MM/HF, and watch it do anything you want it to.

If only Space Marines could take Psyfledreads....
as far as LOTD, the deep striking multimelta is pretty cool. Also one of the only units that can take heavy flamers. I think the key to get the most out of them is to find a way to maximise Aid Unlooked For and Relentless.

lol meant rifledread, I need to stop playing against GK.
You know, it's funny you mention deep striking, relentless Mm and Heavy Flamers, as a land speeder can bring both for 70 pts, less than half the price of a single LotD squad. And they're Fast too!
Lotd is only decent if you pretend every other unit in C: SM doesn't exist. Any job you want them to do can be done by a different unit cheaper and better.

I think they are still pretty good against stuff that sits in the back, aren't they? 3+ invul save and slow-n-purposeful can really make non-mobile backfield units erks.

they're not that much of a threat, or that hard to get rid of: you're overestimating the value of a 3++, like GW did when they overpriced LotD.
Being S&P, sure, yeah, relentless: also, easy to run away from. Land speeder? that can move a full 6" (which the LotD wont, ~50% of the time), or move 12" and fire one gun. For less than half the price, before you actually give them the upgrades. LotD can take a special weapon and a heavy weapon, for 20 and 30 pts, respectively.
A land speeder can take two heavy weapons, for 0-20 pts each. (protip: don't take the assault cannon) And you can take 2-3 of them for the same price as 1 LotD squad with a Multi-melta. And they're fast.
I keep comparing Land speeders to them because they perform about the same role, but far better and cheaper.
What do you like better, one slow heavy weapon or six fast ones?
Exactly.
LotD are quasi-tough, and don't DO close to enough for their points.
Land speeders can 2-3 can burninate backfield troops, or melt vehicles, as you choose, anywhere you need them to.
And they're cheap enough that if they die, it's not really a big deal. 70 pts: so what?
As opposed to LotD, who you've sunk at least 175 pts into, probably 195 for the meltagun, and 5 marines with a 3++? That's... 15 wounds on T4. Not difficult at all to get rid of, and even more easily tarpitted and/or killed thanks to Fearless.

Technically they take an Elite slot... so once you already have filled all your fast choices then LoTD can take up the fight.
Maybe a squad of 10 guys with no upgrades for just over 200 points? They are fearless, fairly accurate on arrival, and fairly resilinet with the 3++. I wouldn't really count on them to kill anything, but they could tarpit some scary unit for a bit.
Or... finally, maybe if you are going for best painted army? They do look pretty cool and might help you win some prizes that way?
Just trying to think positive and come up with some good ideas. Unfortunately like Snale King says, they don't really compare favorably to many of the other units in the book.

Terrible use. Defeats the purpose of LoD.
