I recently picked up Grey Wolf and wanted to get some thoughts on 2 German Infantry Lists I wrote up

Kompanie HQ w. AT Section - 70

Grenadier Platoon w. 3 squads and panzerfaust command team - 165
Grenadier Platoon w. 3 squads and panzerfaust command team - 165

Grenadier Machine Gun Platoon w. 2 sections - 135
Grenadier Anti Tank Gun Platoon w. 3 Pak40 and trucks - 160
Pioneer Platoon w. 3 squads and command panzerfaust - 245
Panzer Platoon w. 4 Panzer IVH - 360
Tank Hunter Platoon w. 3 Hetzers - 255
Rocket Launcher Battery w. 6 NW41 and halftracks - 205
AA Gun Platoon w. 2 Sd Kfz 7/1 Quad2cm - 80

Total 1840 points

The second list is a Sturmkompanie from the same book

Kompanie HQ w. 2 command faust teams and AT section w. 2 panzershreck - 115

Sturm Platoon w. 3 squads, command faust team, 3 faust/mg squad - 250
Sturm Platoon w. 3 squads, command faust team, 3 faust/mg squad - 250

Sturm AT Gun Platoon w. 2 Pak40 - 110
Sturm Machine Gun Platoon w. 2 sections - 135
Sturm Mortar Platoon w. 2 sections - 125
Sturm Heavy AT Gun Platoon w. 3 Pak40 - 155
Sturm Infantry Gun Platoon w. 2 7.5cmlelG18, command faust team and trucks - 80
Tank Hunter Platoon w. 3 Hornisse - 350
Rocket Launcher Battery w. 6 NW41 and halftracks - 205
Sturm AA Gun Platoon w. 3 2cm - 75

Total 1850 points

Which of these two lists is better, and what could be improved on both?

Just my 2 cents

The first lacks heavy AT, something that is all but needed in late war due to all the big cats and IS-2s. The second list lacks mobile AT which is something that just about every list could do with. The Hornise don't really count due to their weak armour and very long range gun.

I would swap the Hetzers for 2 Hornisse in the first list. I'm not sure what mobile AT assets that a Sturm Kompanie can have to be honest but some StuGs, a Tiger or, ideally PzIVs would be useful.

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

They can take a Bäke Schwere Panzer platoon (Tigers) or a StuG G platoon or tank hunter platoon of Hornisse, Jagdpanzer IV's, or Marders......seems to be the only mobile AT they have access to.

Heavy AT isn't always needed though.

A few thoughts that are applicable to both lists.

I think you have too many rocket launchers. 6 batteries is pretty hard to place where LOS wn't be an issue from something. The smoke trails are hard enough to deal with.

Think about dropping them to 3 stands.

The points should allow you to pick up some stukas, which should help against the heavy tanks.

Think about upgrading the 75mm infantry guns of the sturm to 150mm guns. The 75mm just don't bring anything to the table other than direct fire smoke and at 16cm range, its pretty useless at that. the 150s bring a decent anti tank rating fpr close defense and a solid bombardment firepower test with decent chances to take out opposing armor. Since you won't be moving them much, the bunkerbuster aspect isn't as large of a problem.

Heavy AT is useful to have if you don't know who you will be facing, if you play in an environment which doesn't go into heavy tanks then AT 12 is all you need but if see a lot of IS-2 etc or play in tournaments then heavy AT is well worth it as it allows you to control large swathes of the board. I'm a big fan of Hornisse as they are cheap enough to be reasonably cost effective against medium tanks even if there are no Crocs to kill.

6 nebs is overkill however if you take 3 a single casualty will significantly weaken your bombardments and rocket artillery are especially vulnerable. 3 is fine for most things though just be careful to pick your targets.

I would always take light IGs over sIGs as they are light guns so are easy to hide, they are significantly cheaper and most importantly work well in defensive fire, which is their main role, while sill providing a cheap template if needed . The big bonus that sIGs have over leIGs is that they have a nasty bombardment, unfortunately from a 2 gun battery which really limits their effectiveness. They are a bit better in V3, but not enough IMO.

With regard to the Sturm list, this is what I came up with after getting some advice off the FoW forum. The main concern there was lack of assault capable troops. To get a unit capable of it (or so i've been told) I dropped the infantry guns, 2 nebelwerfers, 2 pak 40's, and the hornisse for a unit of stug's with riders and a sturm pioneer platoon

Kompanie HQ w. 2 command faust teams and AT section w. 2 panzershreck - 115

Sturm Platoon w. 3 squads, command faust team, 3 faust/mg squad - 250
Sturm Platoon w. 3 squads, command faust team, 3 faust/mg squad - 250
Sturm Pioneer Platoon w. 3 squads, command faust team and supply truck - 260

Sturm Machine Gun Platoon w. 2 sections - 135
Sturm Mortar Platoon w. 2 sections - 125
Sturm Heavy AT Gun Platoon w. 3 Pak40 - 155
StuG Platoon w. 3 StuG's (1 is StuH42) and tank riders - 330
Rocket Launcher Battery w. 4 NW41 and halftracks - 150
Sturm AA Gun Platoon w. 3 2cm - 75

Total 1845 points
