Yup, DA veterans are a great option.

Not sure if you can still buy their chapter upgrade kit but I think this is the one that has way more models included in it for less.

I would also suggest cutting the drum magazines from AoBR Terminator stormbolters and using them on your bolt guns to represent the special issue ammo.

I'm currently building some Angels of Absolution sternguard and was looking for ways to make them stand out from normal units. What I did was to use marine biker helmets(the ones with the headsets) and some of the heads that you get with the marines vehicles(again with the headsets!). The other thing I did was to go to bitsandkits.co.uk and bought a few of the master crafted bolters( I think you get them with the command set) and some of the combi weapons you get with the commander boxset(storm-bolter, plasma bolter). The helmets and the bolters have helped unify the squad and made them look unique from the rest of the army.

oooooo those are good too! but I kinda like the idea of switching out the melta and plasma and flamer on demand like chapterhouse.

Any other examples on how to make awsome sternies? please?

I used some old death company models i had lying around unused, cut off or fill in the blood angels/death company symbols n i pretty much had the bodies. (but the newer 1s should also do the job)
Add some unique shoulder pads eg any spares left over from captain set, add maybe some bionic arms and a couple of purity seals maybe.
I converted bolters into combi weps to make them look less stock. Side loading magazines for the win.
Also go to town on there stances, really gives them a bit more of a dynamic feel over normal tact marines, eg have one reloading or getting out a combat knife.

A simple method is to replicate the look of the Rogue Trader era Mk VI armour using a studded left shoulder then using white in your colour scheme. The addition of 2nd edition weapons also helps - the combination of these parts implies access to older equipment (think Chapter Relics) whilst the white is usually reserved for veterans (at least, in Codex chapters).

Huh, okay. that pick looks pretty good although I dont have any kind of thouse bitz I did run forge world things through my head though, but I think those would look awsome as a (*gasp*) vanguard squad (especially the iron armor) all though I did use the maximus armor for a melta-gunner

I was thinking of using the forge world armour as sternguard. if you have the bolters it works out to be cheaper than finecast, if not then a squad of 10 costs £1 more than two boxes of finecast if you buy two forge world sets and 10 bolters

For my sternguard I am planning on using FW MkIII Iron armor and magnetizing umbra ferrox bolters to swap out with combi-meltas.

For my sternguard I collected the studded shoulders and beaky helms that come in tac boxes and most space marine vehicles. and 2 space torsos with the front gorgot. So 2 bald guys and 4 beaky helms With a studded shoulder each. Currently working on general combi weaps to be used for any combi.

Just use beaky helmets and studded shoulder pads.

The FW beaky armour are great sternguard ones.

Wait a second, I need to ask, how many bolters come with the DA veteran kit? I kinda either want 5 bolters or I will buy 5 third party things
