KFF allows Ork vehicles to make a hull down save, one of the Orks best abilities. Playing a social game against a Tyranid player, Hive Guard ignore cover saves unless models are directly in the cover. Would the KFF still grant a save against them?

No. Impaled Cannons ignore almost all cover saves.

The problem is the Hive Guard entry is very vague. It should just say, "Models do not get cover saves from this weapon."
I went through the FAQ and didn't see anything about the Hive Guards weapons, did I miss it?

Q: Can a unit take cover saves from any source other than the terrain they are in, or touching, against Wounds caused by an impaler cannon? (p47)
A: No.

The Nid faq does confirm that the you cannot take kff saves from wounds/penetrating hits from the hive guard.

I thought it was only cover based on LOS that the cannon ignored (hense allowing cover a model is 'in' or touching), which the KFF isn't.

I did thank you, hence my comment.
The FAQ is allowing cover saves not based on LOS (being in or touching terrain) and denying those that are. This follows the description of Impaler Cannon itself.
I'm aware the KFF is worded simply as 'cover' (4ed Codex, 5th expanded on cover, mixed with painfully slow FAQ updates), so following RAW id say no save given, but RAI i'd say yes.

It says you cannot take cover saves except for what's listed.
Is a KFF listed? Is anything other than specific terrain listed?

You don't get KFF cover from the hive guard.
Whether this is what GW intended is another question.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.

It should be in Errata, not FAQ - the Impaler cannons only deny you the "benefits of cover", nothing about cover saves there. Basically the question is in error and the answer wrong.

Spetulhu: You make the (extremely wrong) assumption that GW actually follows the "Anything that changes rules go into Errata/Amendment section and FAQ portion never changes rules".
GW has never followed this and normal FAQ entries have always changed rules.
Errata is used mostly to fix typoes/glaring errors in rules.
Good example is here:
"Q: If a model fires a template weapon out of a vehicle,
will the vehicle be hit if it is underneath the template?
(p66)
A: No it will not be hit."
By strict RAW, you cannot fire template weapons out of transport, as you're not allowed to place template so that it touches friendly model (brb pg 29).

Depending on your unit type you might gain a cover save... Point being the Impaler cannon makes no blanket statement denying you cover saves, only cover. Those are two different things even if related. Typical sloppy GW writing I suppose, and a FAQ entry in the same tradition.
Not that I care, not seen any of my old opponents buying Hive Guard.

If you're denied cover, how can you claim a cover save?
And not using Hive Guard is silly - they are hands down the best unit in the codex.

There's stuff that gives you a cover save without being in cover, such as the afore-mentioned KFF. Templates nullify cover saves, Impaler Cannons deny you cover. Two different things.
Nothing more to add so signing out.

For vehicles at least, the KFF makes them obscured - which is granting cover.
And the FAQ shows you don't get cover saves.

If GW says that they deny cover saves in their FAQ, that's RAW.
They can not be wrong about something that is entirely created by them. If they state that ultramarines are pink from now on, they wouldn't be wrong either.
All of GW's FAQ documents are rules. They just mistakenly named them FAQs rather than rule clarifications. But this very forum is testament at how great GW is at picking words.
