Well just for 15 points on an SM command squad, you get to re-roll failed morale checks in any nearby units, you score an extra S4 attack in CC; and a big space for freehanding.

I'm actually doubting if this is any good. Suggestions?

Just the last point, if you run blobs with commissars you already have your reroll and if you are mech your standard will probably be in the wrong spot for that morale check; the extra attack is moot most of the time due to the size of the CCS and for 15 pts you could get 3 flamers or a plasma gun.

Hmm i guess you were referring to the IG. Im asking about the SM one hehe. I'll make another model for this but ill just stick to a combi-plasma/lightning claw combo with the other 2 with plasma guns. Also, combi-plasma any good?

God, why don't people make this clearer this when they ask this question? The last three times or so that someone asked a question about taking a standard in their HQ unit, I wound up with foot in mouth disease.

Stupid GW for making two armies with such similar sounding upgrades...

I swear that instead of SM I read CCS. Talk about foot in mouth moment.

It's not an extra str 4 attack in CC, it adds +1 to your wounds total for combat res.

Still not sure if it's worth it though.

Well, if you are taking a command squad, i don't see why you wouldn't take a banner and a champion.

Then again, I guess taking a champion means one less melta gun...

and, this:

The Company Campion can buy a meltagun, so you don't loose that. But you pay for combat shield and power weapon wether you want it or not.
A banner for 15p with reroll morale checks, +1 combat resolution and which adds wound diversity is not too bad, if you use command squads at all.

I prefer 5 assault terminators instead, YMMV.

I've got a melta gun on one vet and a combi melta spare if i need to save a few points on special weapons.

I'll just take the standard. Its 15 points and you get an extra wound anyway. Much better than a power sword/LC.

I could think of far worse things to spend 15 points on, if you've got them to spare.

But then again, I could also think of far better things to spend 15 points on, if you've got them to spare.

The problem is, it's a situational benefit for marines, and there really are better things to spend the points on. It's not a laughable choice, but I'd have to know what you're trading it in for to tell you whether or not it's worth it.

I find it a nice addition for my melee oriented Command Squad and run the Standard Bearer with a Lightning Claw.
Although I do not make frequent use of this squad in my lists, it sure is a lot of fun to play.
