I would concentrate on one race for now, get good with that one then think about moving to another one.
Practice a build order that you find comfortable and practice it against AI on Hard and then progress up to Insane level. When you can beat Insane you're ready for the online world.
Resource is key, so it's an idea to capture points as quickly as possible, as well as capping them with listening posts. An uncapped point is a welcome sight for your enemy. If they are producing resource faster than you then you are on the back foot.
If you can rush, and pull it off, you can win the game quite easily although Dark Crusade is not so much about the rush as Vanilla was, it's the stronger units that win the game.
With Tau, Vespid and Commander rush is good, concentrate on Generators or Listening posts and kill off any builders. Follow up with maybe a squad of Kroot to tie up any squads, decapping points when they can.
The Grey Knight T2 tech is good but can leave you open if your enemy decides to mass rush you, vanilla style. Having a better unit doesn't always beat sheer numbers.
I've had some success with 3 Plasma Scouts, Force Commander and Grey Knights to counter this although I am not as good as I used to be. I have problems remembering some build orders as I don't play as often now.
