Hello Dakka I have two questions for you today

#1 Animal in 40k - I have not seen or hear of vary many animals in 40k. I believe I have seen dogs but that is it. So I guess my question is this what animals are in 40k? any cats, cows, pigs?

#2 I'm sure this has been discussed to death but I'm to lazy to look for it.

Now the bugs from Starship troopers, Arachnids how would they fair against a planets PDF and then a Imperial Guard relief force?
I know the Arachnids are nothing like the Tyranids and pose little threat compared to them, but how would the platen fair if they
landed in force? Sure the planets Anit-space weapons would stop them from landing but what if a large force got through?

ps: Space marines are not allowed to help, or exterminatus.

People have got to eat something. Grox are basically the cow analog in most 40k novels, and I think it's safe to assume that most animals are still around one way or another. Dogs have appeared in a few stories I think, and things like Cyber-Mastiffs are cyborg/mechanical dogs as well.

The bugs from Starship Troopers would fare the same as Tyranids would really. It would probably play out like the movie, but Guard have armored support and rifles with a longer effective range than three meters. A warrior bug is basically a hormagaunt.

Cats, Dogs, etc have been mentioned many times.

the Grox is a giant Reptile creature that is the Cow Analog in 40k. used for its meat. horses are here too (rough riders) and several other creatures have been used as riding animals

As for the "Bugs" from starship troopers.

they would be annialated by the IG.
unlike the MI troops in the movie. the IG has far more numbers, better guns, Tanks, and tanks the size of houses and are not totally incompetant tactically/stratigically/millitarily

If you had a movie of the IG vs the Bugs it would be a whole different story.

edit: and a warrior bug is more the size of a carnifex but 1000% more fragile (and faster).

Where humans colonised you'll find animals descended native to Earth in a lot of cases. There's a brief note in a besteriary section to my recollection about how when man expanded throughout the galaxy they brought rats hidden away on their ships. These rats bred with the native fauna on the worlds that were colonised to create all kind of wierd creatures. But of course there's every type of animal in 40k. Any creature that's ever been thought up will have analogy in the 41st Millenium. Chapter Approved released several articles with rules for animals in 40k, like Chatachan Devils, Lesser Barking Toads (the normal Barking Toad explodes like an atom bomb, these just have a large blast), Grox (think Lizardmen Cold Ones), the Slasher Beast (tentacles!), etc. =P

If the Imperium were to face off agaist a race like the Arachnids (film version), which they probably have many times, then it'd vary from case to case. If their was a whole Imperial Crusade launched against them then the aliens wouldn't stand a chance. If it were local system defence forces, the more likely case, then it may end up being a stalemate depending on their equiptment (ie PDF only defend their own planets, not launch raids against others). You'd really need some Imperial intervention to defeat them, ie a system's fleet and any local guard regiments, otherwise the Imperium would just harass them-there's too much other stuff going on, so what's a raid against a planet every now and then?

The Bugs from starship troopers were already fighting "space marines" (Arguably better space marines)....so IG would get stomped.

Or the Bugs just crash an asteroid into it.

Know thy self. Everything follows this.

Rats are everywhere. Any planet that's had human contact at any point has rats.
Temperate planets tend to have terran animals on them. Horses, cows, dogs, cats, etc. Standard European fodder.

Ever thought 40k would be a lot better with bears?
