In my work I have started working with Photoshop, and I have used my models as a training-medium.

A single 17-minute YouTube video, and a few (2-3) hours of playing around, enables a person to do this in 15 minutes;

Selective highlights, additional details, selective increased saturation, removal of mistakes and OSL.

This has had a two-fold effect on my painting;

1. It is scary how easy it is to do effects/transitions that I would NEVER be able to do with a brush.

2. A new-found/re-kindled respect for the awesome individuals who can do this IRL.

It has also led to various other thoughts.

While it is an awesome tool to try out colour-schemes ("I tell you what...throw some Hot Rod Red in there!"), and as a simulation/practice tool in determining where to place OSL, it also open up for presenting mirages and illusions that doesn't really reflect reality.

Then again we are all here to share and inspire, and not to hoard Gallery Votes, right?

Anyway, I just felt inspired to talk about this.

Thoughts and comments?

PS. Yes, I know the above is far from a flawless piece of Photoshop work. This thread isn't about how easy it is to spot my manipulations, but rather how hard it is to spot those of a non-amateur.

I wonder how many people do this in competitions...

Yeah it does seem easy to manipulate pictures in Photoshop to improve them. Btw how did you do the masked heads?

Lol, photoshop-ing the images of your photos is way too easy, especially for somebody who knows what they're doing (I'm damn near a professional here).

But, w/e.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

Wow.

1. My mind would have never even twisted this way. That's really cool and I use GIMP to crop/downsize my pics, but never adjust the colors or do effects. Sometimes I use the color adjuster feature on the dakka gallery, however. The difference in your pics is startling.

2. Anyone who does this with the intent to make their minis look better than they can actually paint them, especially for a contest, is quite lame! I wonder if the judges on dakka are aware of this for the Infinity painting comp.

Your minis look great btw.

Despite using photoshop daily the thought never occured to me about OSL, think I might have to start doing this, not to cheat because I'd only be cheating myself but to give a Visual Refernce to work too. Now where's the Undo button on my paint brush?

6k of flesh tearers and counting....

Not trying to hijack the thread...

The minis in the above example are mine.

I did the mask by adding a small triangular piece of GS and then smooth it with a suitable tool.

same for the rightmost model, the head is a Catachan dude with doo-rag that I trimmed a little, but otherwise same procedure.
