Today I picked up some wargames factory infantry, going cheap at my club, I decided to turn them into a mid war grenadier company (I know they're technically late war but most of the stuff fits fine)

So I've got the HQ with mortars and two platoons, so where do I go from there? For MW grenadiers what support options are good and whats not worth it?

While I don't know the specific options for all MW grenadiers (what book are you using?), I can say you will definitely want some Artillery/Air and some Anti-air for any infantry company.

That really depends, I usually run infantry lists and I only use mortars and heavy mortars with no AAA at all. I occasionally sneak in some nebs but only because they are cheap.

A typical MW grenadier list will have 2 grenadier platoons, a white pioneer platoon, mortars, PaK 40s, nebs/10.5s, Marders and some kind of armour.

There aren't really any bad choices as such, it really depends on your playstyle and what you like.

The only things to avoid are crazily expensive things like Ferdinands.

As an example this is my MW Grenadier list from the Eastern Front book.

HQ with mortars = 95

3 squad Grenadier platoon Panzerknacker = 160

3 squad Grenadier platoon Panzerknacker = 160

3 squad white pioneer platoon with supply truck = 225

Machine gun platoon = 135

2 section heavy mortar platoon = 150

3 PaK 40s = 220

Infantry gun platoon = 70

3 PaK 36 = 80

Captured KV-1 = 140

3 Pz III J (late) = 315

1750

A good infantry base, lots of offensive and defensive firepower backed up by some effective tank support and a KV to scare people.

Ninjaed while typing I don't have the North Africa book but the basic principles still apply and most of the kit is the same (aside from the KV obviously).

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Looks like I'll be getting some more infantry and PSC heavy weapons

Are panzer 4s any good, and if so what type? They can cost an arm and a leg, but seem really killy for MW

PzIVs are good. If you age going to take them then PzIVf2s/Gs are probably the best value. To be honest though I think that PzIIIs with a long 5cm gun are the best German medium tank in MW. The only thing that PzIVs bring is good AT but you should already have that from other sources and they are very pricey.

Panzer III's for MW are awesome, high ROF and excellent for killing everything, and I mean everything. 5 in a Platoon pours out 15 shots. That's alot and you can effectively shoot infantry with your tanks, taking 2 platoons 4 or 5 can be amazingly effective.

Dirty Jon on the Forums here (and runs WWPD) is a bit of expert on this tactic so give him a buzz.

Pak 40's are great MW, not sure what the PAK36's would do?

Heavy Mortars are great, but usually you just want mortars for smoke, so buy some cheap Artillery (Nebs are best) as your Platoon Mortars can lay smoke. I do love heavy 12cm Mortars, but they are not cost effective, their FP3 is pretty good however.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

The PaK 36s are there purely for defensive fire and if someone turns up with something like T26s. Plus they are a cheap platoon.

Heavy mortars are good as they get the range in re-roll and they don't have the smoke trails drawback that Nebs have while being just as destructive. More expensive certainly but in a list like Grenadiers that isn't particularly tight on points I tend to take them over Nebs.

I am also not a fan of on table artillery.

In north africa I don't have access to heavy mortars but everything else is good,

So far this is what I'm planning

HQ with Mortars- 95 pts

Grenadier Platoon, Panzernacker- 160 Pts

Grenadier Platoon, Panzernacker- 160 Pts

Grenadier Platoon, Panzernacker, White Pioneers- 205 Pts

Machine Gun Platoon, 2 sections- 135 pts

Mortar Platoon, 2 sections- 125 pts

thats 880, I want to get to 1500, so where to from there?

You'll want either a lot of AT guns to cover all angles, or some mobile assets that can float between objectives.

I can get 5 pzIIIs in, and have 45 points left, dunno what I can do with that, maybe a pioneer supply truck

4 Pz IIIs would probably be better, that should give you enough points for some AT guns, you should have enough for some PaK 38s. You may even have enough for some Marders.

A pioneer supply truck is usually worthwhile taking.
