This is something I've noticed with several countries, but it might just be the clubs I have specifically seen.

This is a generalization.

Canada (seen 9 clubs) has a huge variety of armies, all built competitively rather than thematically, even though certain armies aren't considered competitive...a great focus on painting, very little on coversion, almost all wh40k, little WHFB and LotR.

US (seen 4 clubs) has more fantasy than Canada, though probably still less than they have wh40k. They have an average focus on painting, and surprisingly good/common conversions.

China (saw 2 clubs) has almost nothing but grey knights and occasionally SW and BA, everything competitive, both conversions and master painting is almost the normal. I didn't even see any LotR or WHFB players in the clubs.

Europe (GB+France, saw 5 clubs) has a HUGE focus on painting and modelling, with people playing the armies they like, and whose models they admire, rather than simply trying to compete. Thematic armies are normal. More WHFB than either of the other two, but still less than their wh40k.

Just thought I'd write down what I noticed for any travelers...though again, I must say, this is a vague generalization, and does not even encompass 100% of the people WITHIN these clubs.

Thoughts?

The Games Workshop in Burnaby has more Fantasy than 40k, I've seen, and for the most part, the armies aren't very competitive.

Could be because it's a Games Workshop, I haven't bothered to try to look for clubs. Mostly because I like being able to go in any day and get a game of 40k, where as clubs have things like Warmachine and MTG. :/

Is there a permanent stickied thread for Chaos players to complain every time someone/anyone gets models or rules besides them? If not, there should be.

Most of the clubs on my list were GW clubs

I only play at my local FLGS (not a GW bunker) and we have a mix of everything. We have super competitive players, guys that put tons of effort into painting/converting, as well as some "fluffy" players (although many of them play at another store nearby)

The guys at my store who do a lot of traveling told me that on the East coast at least, it seemed like in the southern states everything was about competition (lots of unpainted models, rules lawyering, etc) whereas northern states seemed to focus on the hobby part more (painting, conversions, etc) Of course, this was based off what they saw in tournaments, so this is hardly conclusive, just what I've heard

'I've played Guard for years, and the best piece of advice is to always utilize the Guard's best special rule: "we roll more dice than you" ' - stormleader

"Sector Imperialis: 25mm and 40mm Round Bases (40+20) 26€ (Including 32 skulls for basing) " GW design philosophy in a nutshell
